Customer Reviews

the tiles are horrible! Not vintageYes, it has the board you want, the classic, no frills board, but... the tiles are horrible! Not vintage, not nice, not scrabble quality, and that is tragic. The tiles are a tactile and visual part of scrabble. These are slightly off in font and size, and shape. They are also top printed, not the engraved and painted tiles. 1It's technically Scrabble, but don't think you're getting anything like a true reproductionMy spouse bought this version for the nostalgia factor. There's a big, screaming white notification on the right hand side of the box, letting you and everyone else within 25 feet know that this is "Retro". Hasbro can rest assured, even without the tacky badge, nobody will mistake this product was made before planned obsolescence was normalized.Yes, the tiles are wood, but as others have stated, the board is sub par. It's similar to a glossy magazine cover glued onto cardboard. Pretty standard for a new board game, but disappointing for a product you're spending a little more on for a tactile flashback. On opening, the graphics were already cracked at the center seam. There is no way this board could withstand more than 10 gentle opening and closings without cracking the seam to the point of it needing tape. The tiles are unvarnished with printed lettering. Not sure if that's a feature of the original version. The tile font doesn't look like what I remember as a kid--this version looks more like the lettering in the Agway logo, but thinner. But I may be misremembering. If you're avoiding more plastic in your life, this game is a good choice. But you're not gonna wow any Boomers on Christmas morning with this. 3The board is very flimsy and weak. The board is very flimsy and weak. It will definitely tear in half after couple of plays. 1Sorry! The way it should beThe best version of this game is the original one and this retro reissue version does not disappoint. I bought the newer version of Sorry! (fire and ice version) thinking that it was more like this one but the rules are so much different and the lack of an extra pawn really takes away from the game(and the fire and ice rules can be confusing). When I saw the retro version on amazon I just had to get it to relive the experience of playing this game when I was a kid. The game board is an exact replica of the original; however, this time the board folds into a square instead of a rectangle(like the original) and has a split on one side. Some people may not mind this but i prefer boards that fold in half into a rectangle rather than into a square. The pawns are made of wood and feel really high quality unlike the cheap plastic ones you get in the new version. This version also comes with a very thorough set of rules that goes over any potential scenario that may occur in the game. The fire and ice rules were vary vague and left room for confusion especially in the case of the fire and ice pieces. Overall if you are wanting a good complete game I highly recommend this version 5A good classic game This is the classic game I remember playing as a kid. I've been looking for it and not any of the newer versions. I'm posting this video to show what is included to help others make their decision to purchase. It is exactly what I wanted, can't wait to share with the family! 5Just another modern cheaply manufactured thing made to LOOK retro, but really isn't.Overall a nice scrabble set - but just "nice", not fantastic. Just because it sorta/kinda looks retro doesn't mean it really is. As others have noticed, the tiles and troughs are definitely not retro - and the board; while looking retro is definitely not retro in construction. Just another modern cheaply manufactured thing made to LOOK retro, but really isn't. Overall it's just a "meh". I'd rather actually find and play a genuine old set. 3Not really retro. Misleading, and not as advertised.I bought this for my 78-year-old mother-in-law for Christmas, hoping it was going to be like her old board that got lost in a move. In fact, I paid $5 more for this than the regular Scrabble game. Yes, it's Scrabble. But it's not like the old game. The board itself is similar, but flimsy. The tile racks are super cheap, a different design and easy to knock over. And the tiles are NOTHING like the original tiles. They are wood, but the letters are huge and thick, and not embossed... just painted on. Yes, it's Scrabble. But it's not as advertised. Why market it as "retro" if it's not the real deal?? Disappointed, for sure. 2Not as AdvertisedI ordered the Retro Series specifically because the newest version of the game came with cheap red plastic tile holders and the font on the tiles was different. The retro version looks more or less like the old game, if flimsier, except the tiles I received are the new font, not the traditional font. I paid extra for the Retro Series, feel cheated that it wasn't entirely retro. 3better than plastic, but not a replicaNot a good replica, box too big, hard corners on tiles, no embossing on tiles, 1949 edition did not come with a bag 2May Be Retro, But The Way The Board Folds Up Isn t The Same QualityI decided to replace some of the classic board games we grew up with, starting with Sorry. While this retro edition is similar to the game we already have, there s a new feature I m just not crazy about. Our old board is slightly smaller and it opens in half. In the entire 50+ years we ve played with the game, there isn t a rip or tear anywhere to be seen on the board. Hasbro re-designed the way this new board opens now it folds up into quarters, with a big open split through the center of the board. Other than a reinforced middle that allowed for easy bending, the original board had no open seams anywhere. I ve played with other new games designed just like this one, and in no time at all, the boards middles have ultimately ripped, frayed or been damaged in some way. Throw in kids and it s almost sure to happen. This board s middle is entirely exposed to unnecessary stress and wear and tear. One half is split wide open, and the other side is cut to almost the same point. It holds onto the rest of the board by a thread. We won t be getting rid of our old and musty-smelling Sorry game just yet I have the sinking feeling its board will outlast this newer one by many, many years. I wonder why Hasbro felt the need to fold this board up more compactly and into quarters, especially since the box that holds all the pieces is almost the same size as our original game. 3
