Customer Reviews

LOVE our accoridion!!!I can not begin to tell you how happy we are with our accordion!!! My son received his on Christmas and he is already playing songs and impressing our friends. We love, know and trust the Hohner brand and know then to make quality instruments. Thats why I hate the fact that its called a "toy," we feel it should be called a "mini accordion" or "youth sized."My son encourages everyone he meets to take a try at playing and they always sound great after a wee bit of instruction! We have this brand and the Schilling. They appear to be exactly to same to us. One is red and one is white. We love these so much we give them to friends as gifts.Great purchase and it looks great on a shelf of coffee table. We are very very happy with our purchase. 5Hohner Toy Accordion - BlueI bought this as a Birthday gift for my 2 yr. old grandson. He was at my sister's house a few months ago & her grandson had a red one & both boys played with it all day. My husband has a piano keyboard that both my grandsons & grand daughter play with, with him. I thought it would be an added addition for future music growth. It has great sound for a toy. It is well made & seems durable. Kids are happy -7 & 10 year old like it as well & they all take turns playing it. It's a noise maker, so if you don't like a lot of noise then this is not a toy for a quiet household. Came with a little music book & the keys are imprinted with letters so the older children are able to play from the book right out of the box. They all seem to enjoy it. Came as described by the seller on time as promised am pleased with the purchase. 5Hohner should be ashamed to have their name on thisAbsolute junk. The keys do not work out of the box (specifically the A/G key), rendering all the songs in the booklet unplayable due to flat out missing sounds. This is not a way to introduce anyone to the accordion; it gives a horrible impression.Notice how all the toy accordions these days are the exact same looking model, just with a different name on them? It's because all these companies are outsourcing the same junky hardware from the same manufacturer. I have a bad impression of Hohner because of them selling this "instrument." I returned it the same day I received it and tested it out.Since I cannot afford a several hundred dollar student accordion model to use for first impressions, I ended up going on another website to buy used vintage kids accordions that are actually manufactured with some level of quality.Shame on you Hohner for contributing to the Earth's pollution by selling plastic garbage that doesn't even work out of the box. What a waste of resources and time. 1The only toy accordion, you'll ever need. This little toy is so well made and a lot of fun. Every age adult and kid that is a novice to the accordion will enjoy this accordion. It's most impressive to me because my son is so rough with his toys and this Toy accordion seems to be indestructible. 5Great Value, Real Playable Instrument, But Not IndestructibleIf you look through the reviews for this item, it splits between complaints about cheap quality, and high praise from happy families. Both are understandable, but based on the level of function and performance in an instrument in this stupid-low price range, I have to give this product a solid 4 in a range where 5 is perfect, and write a review spelling out the virtues and shortcomings of this remarkable toy accordion. The Good News:This little accordion is a fully playable instrument, capable of making wonderful music in the hands of someone who knows how to play it. It has more than enough range to play at least a simplified version of any song you can play on a larger accordion. If you happen to be interested in playing Cajun, Irish, or one of a few other folk music styles then you'll be happy to find that this accordion is a scaled-down version of exactly the same type of diatonic button accordion you will be playing for those styles. It's capable of playing blends, trills and lots of the embellishments that add style and complexity to good playing, and it can be hard to believe that this kind of wailing sound can be achieved with a plastic children's toy that sells for less than twenty dollars. It's a great practice tool or fun, throw-in-your backpack kind of instrument for picnics, tailgate parties, etc.Ironically, though the size and proportions seem ideal for children, I would have expected it would be hard for kids to play for two reasons: A) The bellows (the expanding part that moves the air) is much slower and harder to push and pull than a real accordion, and B) a "diatonic" accordion is a little confusing in the first place. Unlike a piano-style accordion, every button on this style of accordion plays two different notes, depending on whether you're pushing or pulling on the bellows for air, just like with a harmonica. This can be used to create expressive musical effects not possible with piano-style accordions, but it adds a level of complexity when learning to play.Still, the positive reviews are full of comments by parents with 4 and 5 year-old kids who love their accordions and play songs on them all the time, so obviously I don't know enough about kids to know what they're capable of.The Bad News:These instruments are cheaply made. They are complex mechanisms with many moving parts and they are not ruggedly built. It might survive a fall to the floor, but if your child throws it down the stairs it will probably not work right afterwards. There is also an unfortunate design compromise that allows you to accidentally push the bass and harmonic buttons all the way inside the accordion if you push on them in a certain way, and this will will completely stop it from working. On the bright side, the accordions are built to be taken apart, and it is actually possible to fix many common problems yourself, (including the popped-inside bass and harmonic buttons I mentioned) if you're that type of person. There are actually toy-accordion repair videos on YouTube, if you can imagine that! Finally: There are many, many versions of this same basic design available here on Amazon. You'll find the same accordion in a million different colors and with at least ten different brand-names painted on the faceplates. Inside, they are all exactly the same, made in China, and sold with German, Italian or Spanish names like Hohner or Barcelona. Don't expect the Hohner version to be any better because the name is famous, it's the same product on the inside. However, The Hohner version comes in this cool transparent plastic, either in red or blue, so you can see how everything inside works! This makes the Hohner version my favorite, and probably the one the kids would like the most. 4Good packaging, defective itemCame home to work to find the amazon box on my front door. When inside and carefully opened the box to find the accordion box (along with a small booklet on how to play it). Opened the box and the accordion itself appeared fine. Opened the bellows and the cords + bass side sounded good. Went to play the actual button notes and literally just air. Thought maybe I was playing it wrong, spent a good 10 minutes fiddling with it to barely play any audible notes. Set it aside on my desk and heard a somewhat loud thunk. I looked inside the treble side to find all the reeds had detached itself from the button side. Since I don't have any access to any accordion tools and beeswax (which is applied to the reeds so they actually stick to the buttons) this rendered the instrument useless and impossible to play. Luckily I was able to get a refund on this product with little hassle, though I wish i was able to just get a replacement. I'll look elsewhere for my accordion needs if the seller can't check to see if the product they are selling is actually usable. 1Little instrument, big sound!Six year old loved it! Works perfectly. Yes, it is small. But it makes a big sound! Nice instrument for a kid. It is not really a "toy", but a great way to begin learning about playing music. Comes with a small sheet with a couple of songs. It would be nice if it had a small booklet of songs. But I'm sure there are some online. 5or one more like a real accordionMy son wanted an accordion for months and kept asking for it over and over (he's 5). We ordered this for Christmas and it came in just a few days. The toy itself is quite a bit smaller than we had expected, and the folding part looks to be a thick cardboard material. It was a little bit sticky in the folds when we first got it and we had some concerns over whether or not it would rip apart, but it's held up ok so far. If you are looking for one that the kids can actually play songs on, or one more like a real accordion, you may want to spend a bit more money. We were fairly happy with it for the price though, and it worked fine for our 5 year old to just push and pull on. 3Some Good - Some BadMfg desperately needs QC.Granted, it's a 'Toy Accordion'. Nonetheless it arrived New with a Bellows that leaked like a Screen Door; plus only half of the Notes (Reeds) played; plus the Grill Cloth was loose. Rather than sending it back, waiting, and possibly getting one even worse, I chose to repair this one; as I am a qualified Accordion Repairman. Reeds are not Steel, but rather Brass, which are less efficient. Discovered Bellows leak was due to one whole quadrant not being Glued. Re-Glued Bellows are now Tight. Was finally able to get ALL of the Treble Reeds functioning. At least now most Melodies can be played. Reeds are grouped in "Pairs" for each Note. Thus, each Note played produces a 'Echoing' or 'Trilling'. This is somewhat a surprising extra for a 'Toy'. Tips: As 'New', the Bellows WILL be Stiff, so "Stretch'em Out" for some much needed exercise, so they won't be so Stiff. If your Bellows does leak were it joins the plastic, you cannot make effective repairs from the Outside. Sound: After repairs were completed, I was rather astonished how easy it was to play, and how cute this little Melodion sounds. Now it's ready for my Grand Nephew. If so many problems had not accompanied it, I would have been very satisfied. 2Cheap but did not work or sounded good.It came with two buttons not working properly. Sounded like the reeds were damaged. My kid liked it so I didn't return it for that reason but would not buy it again 1
