Customer Reviews

Great selection of starter cardstl;dr: Great selection of starter cards, high diversity, fair number of common/uncommon/rare cards, cards span two decades of Magic: The Gathering.Pros:Few copies - the most duplicates I had of any one card was 4 (excluding basic lands, of which there are 16 each)Cards of all ages - from 1993 to 2015Cards are in generally great conditionNice mix of commons/uncommons/raresSturdy box, well suited for storing your new cardsRares were mostly separated, and the rare foils came in a card sleeveBasic land cards were wrapped together, so you knew where and how many there were - no guess-work; 16 of each, or 90 in total.Cons:Few cards in foreign languages (four cards of 1,066)Probably not enough power cards for a very strong/themed deckI stopped playing Magic: The Gathering over sixteen years ago, but recently decided to get back into it on a whim. I had sold off my old cards and had nothing to start from, although my girlfriend still had her cards from back in the day. My desire to get back into the game was inspired by visiting a local gaming shop, where they had plenty of cards and accessories stocked. I looked online for cards and found this set of "1000 Assorted Magic: The Gathering Cards" and figured... I like to collect, I have nothing... pretty much anything, if the cards aren't all cheap duplicates (and even then, a few duplicates of useful cards never hurt anybody!) in bad condition, I should be good, right?Absolutely the case. If you're in my position, you'll be abundantly pleased by what you get, assuming there's any consistency. Of the 1,067 cards that arrived, four were in a foreign language and two had stamps on them. One had a little wear. As far as the condition of the cards went, that's 7/1,067 you could gripe about, if you're so inclined (only the foreign cards bother me, and since there's only four of them, and they're all commons... I don't care too much). As for packaging, the cards all come neatly packed in the sturdy cardboard box pictured in the description. The basic lands (of which there were 16 per color, for a total of 90 basic lands) were separately wrapped, so you didn't have to worry and guess how much junk you were getting... although again, if you're starting fresh, some lands won't bother you. Other than that, only the rare foils were likewise separated in their own little plastic sleeve. Nice touch. So, what specifically did I get? Well, here's the run-down (yes, I followed the example of others in this review and recorded everything so I could write this review):Lands: 90 (+1 foil land)White: 158Blue: 179Black: 174Red: 163Green: 178Artifact: 76Multi: 48Total: 976 cards (+91 basic lands)Common: 779Uncommon: 161Rare: 36Foil: 25All in all, it seems like a fair spread of cards. I wouldn't expect anything super valuable, but you'll get a ton of diversity and a few out-right powerful cards. I personally like building "themed" decks (goblin decks, cleric decks, zombie decks, etc), and if you're going in that route or aiming for something that'll be able to compete with long-time players, you'll probably need to get more than this. Still, it's a fine foundation upon which to build by buying newer cards or specific singles. For new players, collectors, old players looking to get back into the game, or players who just want to add a bunch of diverse cards to their library, this is a great purchase. I'm not just blowing smoke, either, my girlfriend and I both bought another one of these after seeing what cards I got in my first one. They arrive today, and I can only hope the next two boxes are as good as the first. Will update! 5A whole heap of cards (see edit)If you're looking to bulk up your collection, this is a great value. If you're looking to start a collection, this may not be your best bet. The box contains very few duplicates, which makes it impractical for deck building. As advertised, it came with a handful of rares, a bunch of foils and a few split cards. It also came with some foreign language cards (A total of 7 - Japanese and Russian - in the case of my two boxes). The oldest cards were from the Fallen Empires expansion. There were a good number of artifacts and multi-color cards, as well as some non-standard lands. With the exception of two cards, all were in near mint condition and those two exceptions (one had schmutz on it and another had a slightly damaged edge), wouldn't have garnered a second look if I wasn't paying attention. For what I paid for it, I am not disappointed. It would have been nice to be able to put together at least one decent deck, but I'm not sure that's a reasonable expectation for a bulk pack for less than $30 that spans more than two decades of expansions and core sets. I probably won't be buying another box but I absolutely will be buying from Star City Games again... maybe just singles instead.Edit: Ok, so I did buy another one (and another one... free shipping, you know) with the intent of making a draft cube. Since there are 25 rares and you need 24 rares for a cube, I thought it was a perfect fit.Unfortunately, the color distribution of the rares is rather unbalanced and I suspect that all boxes are going to be this way since there are only 25 rares. There were plenty of uncommons, however and this is more than enough to make a couple of peasant and/or pauper cubes.I also spent the time to input this into a fresh deckbox.org account to get a clear picture of what is in the product. I got 1029 cards, not including the basic lands or 2 non-English cards. There were at total of 842 distinct cards. However, because the way deckbox counts the cards, two cards with the same name from a different set would be considered two distinct cards, as would two cards of the same name from the same set if one is foil, so the actual number is slightly lower than this.According to Deckbox, the total value of the collection is $158. Only 3 cards in the box were valued more than a dollar and all were below $1.50. Even if this price is inflated 4 times (meaning you could only sell the set for a quarter of the cards' value) you'd still come out ahead.I got 31 foils, 25 rares (5 of them foil), 202 uncommons. None of these were particularly valuable. The rares and uncommons only accounted for about $50 of the $158 value, with the remaining 802 commons averaging a value of $0.12 each. Doesn't sound like much, but they make up for it in numbers. If you compare this to buying a booster box, you're getting almost twice as many cards, likely with far less duplication at almost a quarter the price. You're likely to find cards in the boosters that are far more valuable, but on balance I think this is a better deal. If you have $100 to spend on magic, buy three of these boxes and a good case to keep them in, then use them as trading fodder. If my box is any indication, you'll come out way ahead and you can trade for the good cards you wanted from the boosters. 4Great quality, few duplicates, nice job of separating the foils and rares.I bought two of these, for a total of 2000 cards. of those 2000 cards there were like 1875 unique cards (2 foreign language cards - didn't' count the lands) all the cards were in great condition. very satisfied. Much better experience (and price!) than our local card shop - we purchased 1000 cards from him (mixed common/uncommon) and had 77 foreign language cards and only 625 unique cards (no lands in the box)... no thanks.the foils and rares were in separate little packages and there were quite a good count of uncommon in the sets - the vast majority of the cards were relatively recent expansions (mostly theros block, return to ravnica block and battle for zendikar block) with a fair amount of Tarkir also (probably luck of the draw there, really) there were a small handful of some pretty old cards, a card here of pre ice age stuff, few ice age, few tempest, few urza, etc. about 50 total cards of that type, so like 2-3%all in all, very satisfied. 4Only 1 card out of 1041 was worth more than 15 centsThe only issue I had was that only 1 of the cards in the entire box (and that's including the rares and uncommons) was worth more than 15 cents, which makes it obvious that they are purposely leaving out cards of value (which they should probably mention in the description so people like me don't waste my time checking values).Aside from that, the box is a good mixture across the board, I got a total of 1041 cards of which only 76 were classic and 9 reprints. All the cards were in new condition aside from the older cards which were in perfect shape for their age. Here's a breakdown of what I got84 (Basic Land) 933 (Common) 144 (Uncommon) 31 (Rare)Out of these 32 were foilHere's a type breakdown8 (Halfcolor) 46 (Multicolor) 32 (Colorless) 48 (Artifact) 18 (Land)147 (Black) 158 (Green) 194 (Blue) 205 (White) 184 (Red) 4What was supposed to come in the box: [865 ...What was supposed to come in the box: [865 commons and uncommons, 25 FOIL commons, uncommons or promotional cards, 25 Rares, 5 FOIL rares, and 80 basic land cards]What I actually got:Total Cards: 985 (includes the basic land pack) So 15 cards under, but they gave me MORE than 25 rares and MORE than 25 Foils . . . so, hard to complain about that.Estimated value of JUST the Rares and Foils: $16Estimated value of uncommons and commons assuming an average of 5 cents a card: $40Based on resale alone, I'm certain I could get at least my money back. Very few duplicates. The amount of each color is pretty even. Most cards were in the date range of 2012 - present, but there were a few old cards from the 90s - early 00s which are fun to have. All cards were in mint or near mint condition. The number of rares, foil rares, and foil commons was as described. The box itself is good quality. I wish the divider in the middle of the box was longer, it's a little too short and lets some of the cards slide around at the edges of the box. Easily fixed with another piece of cardboard cut to fit.The cards definitely seem authentic. I tested all of the foils and rares, and a large number of the commons/uncommons using the "bend test", flashlight test, and examined the print pattern and set symbols. I also compared them to some known-good cards from my collection. There was no sign of any fakes. You can buy this with confidence. Star City Games customer service was top notch too, very fast and informative when I emailed them with some questions. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a nice collection of random cards. 5Exactly as DescribedI was curious about distribution across sets so here's what was in my box...TOTAL CARDS: 1080MISC (170):5 Foil Rares33 Rares27 Other Foils (2 uncommon)20 Non-Basic Lands (2 uncommon)80 Basic Lands (all M14, good distribution of art)6 Foreign Language (4 uncommon)The Rest by Block/Set (rarity is common unless indicated):LEGACY (46):FEM (10): 10 Fallen Empires (6 uncommons)ICE (4): 4 Ice Age (1 uncommon)HML (3): 3 HomelandsMIR (6): 5 Mirage (1 uncommon) / 1 Visions5E (2): 2 5thTMP (2): 1 Tempest / 1 StrongholdUZ (2): 2 Urza's Saga6E (1): 1 6th (1 uncommon)IPA (6): 3 Invasion (1 uncommon) / 3 Apocalypse7E (2): 2 7thOTJ (3): 3 OdysseyOLS (5): 2 Onslaught / 2 Legion (1 uncommon) / 1 ScourgeMODERN (864):8E (2): 2 8thMD5 (12): 7 Mirrodin / 1 Darksteel / 4 Fifth DawnCBK (2): 1 CHK / 1 BOKRAV (9): 3 Ravnica (1 uncommon) / 3 Guildpact / 3 DissensionTSP (3): 1 1 Time Spiral / 2 Planar ChaosLRW (2): 2 MorningtideSHM (4): 4 ShadowmoorALA (1): 1 Shards of AlaraM10 (4): 4 10th (1 uncommon)HOP (1): 1 PlanechaseZEN (6): 6 Worldwake (3 uncommon)ROE (7): 7 Rise of the EldraziM11 (3): 3 11th (1 uncommon)SOM (13): 9 Scars of Mirrodin (2 uncommon) / 3 MBS / 1 New PhyrexiaM12 (6): 6 12thISD (10): 1 Innistrad / 1 Dark Ascension / 8 Avacyn Restored (2 uncommon)RTR (19): 12 RTR (1 uncommon) / 3 Gatewatch (1 uncommon) / 4 Dragon's Maze (1 uncommon)M14 (9): 9 14th (5 uncommon)THS (115): 51 Theros (13 uncommon) / 11 Born of the Gods (2 uncommon) / 53 Journey (9 uncommon)CNS (4): 4 ConspiracyM15 (50): 50 15th (7 uncommon)KTK (135): 111 Khans of Tarkir (21 uncommon) / 4 FRF (1 uncommon) / 20 DTK (1 uncommon)MM2 (2): 2 Modern Masters 2015 (1 uncommon)ORI (7): 7 Magic Origins (4 uncommon)BFZ (26): 17 BFZ (1 uncommon) / 9 Oath of the Gatewatch (1 uncommon)SOI (92): 89 Shadows Over Innistrad (8 uncommon) / 3 Eldritch MoonEMA (1): 1 Eternal MastersCN2 (2): 2 Conspiracy: Take the CrownKLD (45): 31 Kaladesh (8 uncommon) / 14 Aether Revolt (1 uncommon)MM3 (6): 6 Modern Masters 2017 (1 uncommon)AKH (196): 145 Amonkhet (4 uncommon) / 51 Hour of Devastation (1 uncommon)XLN (69): 69 Ixalan (8 uncommon)A25 (1): 1 Masters 25RARITY DISTRIBUTION38 Rares128 Uncommons914 CommonsDUPLICATES:Very few duplicates for the number of cards. Even within the largest block (AKH, Amonket), the most copies of a single card were on the order of 4-6. I don't think I received more than 6 copies of any card except for basic lands.CONDITION:All cards were near mint with the exception of 1 common (from THS) which has a crease.VALUE:I checked the prices for all rares and foils. The foil rares are the most valuable, ranging from $0.71 to $2.00. The non-foil rares range from $0.25 to $0.53. I saw 1 uncommon with a value of about $1, but I didn't check all of the uncommons.COMMENTS:This is about as good as it gets I imagine. You definitely get your money's worth, though I wouldn't expect any bombs. It's a fantastic spread of cards, not only across sets but also in terms of duplicates (relatively few, or at least no "20+ copies of a single card"). I was a little disappointed that almost 200 of the cards came from a single block (Amonkhet), with another 135 from the Khans block and 115 from the Theros block. That's over 40% of the cards from 3 blocks that I'm not super interested in. But hey, at least there are relatively few duplicates!PUNCHLINE:An excellent selection to build up a collection. Also fantastic for Commander. I'll probably buy at least 1 more of these. 5exactly as advertisedbought as a gift for my son. he said the box contained:1095 total cardsby color199 white - 2 rare, 17 uncommon, 4 foil142 blue - 6 rare, 12 uncommon, 5 foil162 black - 3 rare, 26 uncommon, 6 foil184 red - 10 rare, 15 uncommon, 6 foil170 green - 4 rare, 15 uncommon, 5 foil23 gold/hybrid - 3 rare, 6 uncommon, 4 foil81 artifact/colorless - 3 rare, 13 uncommon, 2 foil129 land - 1 rare, 3 uncommon, 85 basicby rarity32 rares - 5 foil107 uncommon - 8 foil866 common - 19 foil85 basic land- 17 of eachduplicatesmost cards had 1 or 2 copiesmany had 3 or 4 copiesonly seven commons had 5 or more copies, with no more than 6 copies of any one cardthere were 3 copies of two different uncommons and 2 copies of 7 different uncommonsno rares had duplicatesprice valueit's bulkmaybe two or three cards worth 50 cents and probably more than 2 dozen worth 25 cents1 card had writing on the back with a permanent markerplay valueno staples but a lot of playable cardscould probably not make a very competitive deck with the cards inside 5As expected.I read the other reviews first, so I knew what to expect. I did indeed receive 2 Russian cards and also 1 in Japanese, which were useless to me, but everything else was as advertised. A handful of cards were 10+ years old, most were more recent, but all in excellent condition - not a single card scuffed, marked, or bent. It included 17 copies of each basic land, which struck me as an odd number, but serviceable; also included were 14 other lands of various types. A few Draft-specific cards and Conspiracies were included, along with some DCI cards. Color spread was pretty good, but not perfect - in this particular case, I ended up with slightly more blues and a slight lack of greens, but still a good mix (and again, as expected). I received 5+ copies of only a handful of cards, and no more than 7 of any one card except lands. Mix of creatures VS spells was in a good spot, too, with no obvious shortages. Possibly worth mentioning that the box included 0 Planeswalkers or Mythic Rares, but that didn't bother me. On the subject, the box itself is serviceable and strong, branded very obviously with multiple Star City Games logos, and able to hold the 1000 cards perfectly, but don't expect to be able to fit any additional cards. My overall impression is that if you're going to do a bulk order of MTG cards to bolster or start a collection, this is a pretty good way to go. 5Worth the money.Basically, in short, buy one of these boxes. It's worth the money as you get a wide range of quite playable cards from various releases and with minimal duplicates. Again, in short, this is a perfect way to start or expand a collection. I'm pleased with it enough that I'm purchasing another right after posting this review. Trust me, you won't regret this lot as you would these boxes from other sellers. The box I received contained a total of 1,093 cards. The sets that these cards come from are basically every set from Mercadian Masques up through the recently released Core Set for 2019. I didn't find anything older than Mercadian Masques, which came out in 1999.If you're thinking about value, most of these cards are found for between $0.05 and $0.50 on average. There are a few cards that I received that go for a little more but nothing that sells for more than a couple dollars.Duplicates were actually quite low, having only 2 or 3 of any one particular card. The only occurrence of a particular card having more than 3 copies was with the 4 copies of the artifact destroying instant Shatter. I estimate that duplicates only made up about 15% of the box. This is excellent because nobody wants 100 copies of a wurm creature they'll never even use 1 of. Some other sellers have no problem throwing a ridiculous amount of duplicates in these lots. Here, you basically get what you need and can actually use in deck building.I did receive 3 foreign cards. Still, out of a box that contains over 1,000 random cards, I would saythat's not too bad. I included a picture of them, as they're actually quite cool and might lead to mestarting a collection of foreign cards. My only complaint is that I didn't receive a single white rare.Below, all ( ) areas represent card totals of the specified kind.---~ Foils (32) ~---------------------------------------- Rare (5), Uncommon (4), Common (23)---~ Land Cards (99) ~--------------------------------- Swamp (17) Forest (17) Island (17) Plain (17) Mountain (17 Non-Basic (14 - with 2 Uncommon and 12 Common)---~ Artifacts (69) ~-------------------------------------- Rare (3), Uncommon (14), Common (52)---~ Multi-Coloured (51) ~-------------------------------Rarity - Rare (7), Uncommon (23), Common (21)Card Types - Legendary Creature (3), Creature (31), Instant (8), Sorcery (9)---~ Black (171) ~----------------------------------------Rarity - Rare (4), Uncommon (27), Common (140)Card Type - Creature (101), Enchantment (24), Instant (24), Sorcery (22)---~ Blue (167) ~-----------------------------------------Rarity - Rare (4), Uncommon (21), Common (142)Card Type - Creatures (83), Enchantment (28), Instant (41), Sorcery (15)---~ Red (183) ~------------------------------------------Rarity - Rare (6), Uncommon (31), Common (146)Card Type - Creature (102), Enchantment (17), Instant (37), Sorcery (27)---~ Green (148) ~----------------------------------------Rarity - Rare (3), Uncommon (22), Common (123)Card Type - Creature (83), Enchantment (12), Instant (32), Sorcery (21)---~ White (170) ~-----------------------------------------Rarity - Uncommon (32), Common (138)Card Type - Creature (98), Enchantment (18), Instant (47), Sorcery (7) 5
