All this is great, but I gave it 4 star because the ...I bought the 4m lemon powered clock as a science experiment and demonstration for my 5 year old. The system worked right out of box. It contained copper and zinc electrodes, with the appropriate wires to connect them to each other and to the clock. I have a lemon tree in my backyard (that was the original reason that I bought this in the first place). After poking the electrodes and connecting the wires appropriately, the clock started working. All this is great, but I gave it 4 star because the clock is not back lit (well I don't expect it be so at this price) but it does make it hard to see if it is working at all or not. Maybe an LED light could have been more effective. Anyways, not a serious flaw as such. See the attached photo to see how it works. 4Exactly what we needed for a quick science projectMy daughter needed a small science project on electricity and per her teacher's instructions, she couldn't buy a kit.This straddled the lines between 'not a kit' and homemade project (teacher okayed it as a 'supply').Simple, fully functional, reusable. Easy to clean (because hello sticky acidic lemon juice!) 5Fun science projectBought for my son for his science fair project worked well he ended up taking 1st in his grade (mind you it s a small class & he did a lot of research & extra along with this) simple came quickly and verified cool by my son 5Decent basis for a 4th grade scient projectI got this mainly for the clock, for use in a 4th grade science project. I already had copper and zinc rods suitable for use, but I couldn't find a nice low-power clock. For the price, and seeing her joy, it was worth it. We simply secured the clock to a piece of plywood using some hot-glue, which made the whole thing easy to transport. The clock itself is fickle. The "buttons" are rather small, prone to multiple presses and took a bit of experimenting to figure out which button did what. No show-stopper, but it was a little irritating to keep resetting the clock after 9 year old fingers played with it... 4Convenient, quick demo of the principle.It works as expected-- it would be hard not to. The parts are rather simple and frankly not of tremendous quality. But what we're paying for here is the convenience of having the parts in one package, ready to go for a quick demonstration. And for that, its not a high price to pay.- The watch is a little flimsy-- could not get it to keep the time set, even though I secured the wires to the leads as best I could..- The leads seem to have oxidized rather quickly.- I believe the copper rods are cooper-clad rather than solid copper.But none of that is a big deal.I let it run for a day or two, with the lemon wrapped in plastic-wrap to prevent dehydration. It stopped after a couple of days, ran out of [lemon-]juice. The bars looked rather oxidized, unsurprisingly.Yea if you had the time and inclination you could take apart a cheap digital watch or find a spare LED; get some actual copper wire; find a zinc nail or what-not, and make this yourself. It could make for a fun scavenger hunt with the kids.But this kit is extremely convenient and makes a nicer stocking-stuffer than a bag of found miscellany. 4Perfect!!Worked great! So EASY!!!I tried to gather all the supplies for a fruit battery at a local hardware store.. I got the wrong stuff and it didn t work. And my son and I wanted to kill each other trying to get it to work. Wasted my money and time.I decided to see if amazon had something.. sure enough!! This was the best science project ever!! Teacher and other kids loved it. It was so easy to complete, the only way to go for science projects! 5CheapOnce we finally got it to work it was great! The wires and zinc plates are extremely flimsy so you have to be very careful to not brake it. Clams on the wires would have been very helpful.Overall I would buy it again if I had too. 3Fun Little ExperimentFun science experiment. We didn't have a lemon so used a potato. The kids were impressed with how long it ran even as the potato rotted away. We were not able to re-use it though so only giving it four stars. 4One time useThis is a great purchase for a school project, the materials are flimsy at best and not built to last. Our clock had a loose wire which cause the time to constantly reset, with enough pressure you could hold the wire in place but as soon as we stopped squeezing the wire would lose contact off and on and keep reseting. On the good side, it had everything we need to fulfill the needs of my sons science project. And yes, this works with potatoes. 2Where are the directions?Purchased for a 4th grade science experiment. If you don t have a basic understanding of how to do this or are leaving it up to a young child to figure this out on their own, this is not for you, directions are not clear. 4
