Customer Reviews

Love this critter case! Our kids have used and over-used this critter case after catching their butterflies with the Melissa & Doug nets. It is a wonderful product- carefully and thoughtfully made for kids to take care of and admire nature. After they took it to school and everybody played with it (several times) we bought another one to replace our first. The quality of this case is very good, though. 5AWESOME and Educational! No batteries needed and kids actually will learn something! What STEM is all about. We bought the Critter Case, the Bugs A-Z, and the Explorer Outdoor Adventure Kit together (you know things often bought together to get you to spend a little more). Well, it was worth it. Our 7 year old grand-daughter is into science, experiments, etc. She absolutely loved this. Her 2 year old (almost) little sister did too walking around with the Critter Case (with the accompanying plastic spider that comes with it) showing everyone . BUG! BUG! The Outdoor Adventure Kit comes with great stuff to make it complete including a small backpack to keep all the pieces in, magnifying glasses, binoculars, tweezer (so you don't have to touch those ugly bugs), a whistle (incase you're out exploring and get lost) and more. She loved it, so we loved it so it looks like we'll be buying another complete set for a different grand-daughter who turns 7 next spring. Highly recommended! 5Adorable but...My son was SO excited to receive this for Christmas! He loves catching bugs in the yard. However two things: 1) the door is not exactly well-sealed (at all) and any creatures could easily escape. 2) our door already broke off the hinge and he hasn t even used it yet. It s a plastic piece holding it on that cracked. So now I have to replace it or find something better. 3Durable and easy to useWe got this for our 2 year old for Christmas. It s excellent in that he can easily open and close it himself. It gets played with by our toddler but also the baby and 8 and 10 year old, all boys. It s been 7 months and it is still going strong, inside or outside of the house. Though I personally am sure that leaving it outside will cause it to wear out faster. Oh, and it s not only real or plastic insects that the cage has been used for. It s been stuffed with wooden blocks, a few dolls and cars, magnetic letters, etc.I would definitely buy this again for my boys or as a gift. 5Not Great for Monarch Caterpillars - Cheap plastic - Breaks easlity if not already broke on arrivalI bought this to raise some Monarch Caterpillars, thinking it would be a good way for my 4 yr old daughter to learn about them and watch them grow.1. It came with a rip in the Mesh. It was small, but still big enough for a caterpillar to escape. I had to patched with Duct Tape.2. The round plastic rotating opening didn't have a secure seal. I ended up putting cling wrap on the inside of the round plastic piece to insure that (again) no caterpillars escaped.3. I have small hands, but it sure was hard to get my hand in there to clean and move things around without man-handling the caterpillars.4. The round plastic rotating opening ended up breaking about a week in. Just snapped off right at the screw. Duct Tap saved the day again.5. About 2 weeks in, the handle broke off the cage. Duct taped for a third time. It's a cute concept, but not a good solution for housing insects long-term. 2I know this looks like a toy but I bought it for myselfI know this looks like a toy but I bought it for myself. We just got some property and I wanted to know what kind of moths/butterflies these caterpillars would grow into. So I found this bug catcher online and it worked great! The caterpillar I found made a lovely cocoon in there and we are waiting for it to come out now. We also have Oak Galls and next Spring I plan on finding a fallen green one and putting that in there. When the kids come up I will use it to put in the grasshoppers they find or other critters and then we will let them go by the pond. I have had more fun with this myself already! It is well built. The only thing I would suggest is that if you are looking for a very scientific container, this one has a door that just slides to the right or left and it does not seal, so ants and such could escape easily-they could also get in too if you are not careful where you put it. 5Not for critters (especially crickets)My son got this from grandma. The first time he used it for a roly poly, it was great...until the roly poly met his maker. Now what to put in the case? How about a cricket? My son caught a cricket to put in this thing and sometime in the night, it escaped. The cricket houdini is now loose in the house, keeping me awake at night. You can see in the photo that the cricket chewed right through the mesh. 1Flimsy and cheap. Not really worth it in my opinion. I got my daughter one of these. A couple months later I bought my daughter's friend a similar one for her birthday from Marshalls that was a Melissa & Doug one. It was a little bit smaller but was of way more quality. This one that I bought that I am reviewing on has some cheaps flimsy screen around it that got a hole in it within the first month. The Melissa & Doug one that I paid $5 less for at Marshall's is of way more quality and is still looking the same as the day I bought it for my daughter's friend. Wish I wouldn't have bought this and got my daughter the same Melissa & Doug one that I got for her friend for her birthday. 2Didn't get to use, but I really love it anywayThis year was the first time I grew plants to attract butterflys. One morning, I noticed a swallotaily caterpillar on munching away happily on my fennel herb fronds. I was so excited! I didn't really have a proper place to house her but I so desperately wanted to watch her evolve. I saw this little critter case and ordered it immediately. I have prime but I never thought that I would get it the same day. Well I did! It is such an adorable case and would have been perfect for this little critter making its chyrsalis. I was planning on bringing the caterpillar to its new temporary home the next morning. Unfortunately,:(( I didn't see it the next day. I am guessing a bird had it for a nice meal. I am looking forward to finding my next caterpillar, but because I have this little critter box, I won't waste a minute. 5Too fragileMy 4 y old son loved this and immediately upon opening the Amazon box went about collecting baby frogs from our garden (which he returned to the garden after a few minutes of closer viewing in the "critter case"). After two days of great fun, the netting on the outside of the "critter case" pulled away from the sides, leaving a large hole (2 inches - more than big enough for most of the "critters" he would catch to escape through). My rating of 3 stars is an average of a 4-5 star initial impression because it was a ton of fun while it lasted, and a 1-star rating for the huge disappointment after it developed the hole because it is now useless. 3
