Customer Reviews

Five StarsThese are very fun to put together. 5Goufing around with a small kitIt's pretty solid, just not much to the build or articulation. 3Mean looking GuyItem was as advertised and fast delivery. 5This is no Zaku, boy...And unfortunately, it really isn't. I bought this kit as well as a Zaku II, and it doesn't even compare in quality and enjoyment for assembling. Most annoyingly, the head of this Gouf doesn't even go on right. It just won't fit with the piping on it. My honest opinion is that it looks like the designer just goufed up the neck area entirely. 3Five Starsbecause the product came in the time that had such infinite thanks . 5A Classic Model Done RightThe Gouf is one of Gundam's most iconic suits, and this latest version of it is considerably better constructed than previous releases. You're getting the classic kit, but certainly not the classic molding! What's more, this dark-colored kit is perfect for the builder who is experimenting with top coat. Whatever coat you apply over this kit will show up in high contrast.I built this kit in a little over half an hour at a leisurely pace, and I think that makes it a good one for beginning to intermediate builders. 5HGUC Gouf reviewHGUC GOUFOh boy, one of those older kits. The Gouf was released on the second year of the HGUC line's run, and it shows its age. Let's take a closer look at the kit.At a glance, the Gouf looks great. The two shades of blue are somewhat color accurate to the MSG anime, though the dark blue used for the body and the shield could be darker. However, the looks are only there to compensate for the kits poor articulation. The head works well and could be lifted slightly for more movement, but the tubes are rigid and affect the movement too much for the lift to accommodate, making diagonal downwards glances impossible. The arms work well, though the spiky shoulders give little clearance for the arms. I can't help but to point out that the Zaku I has a much better shoulder pauldron joint for much better arm clearance. As to be expected of in an early HGUC kit, the arm only has one joint that goes for just over 90 degrees. Interestingly, the hands are on ball joints for smooth movement, though the Gouf has plastic extensions on the ball joint stem that limits the articulation to a degree. The legs are also fine, though the two joints in the knees are unsatisfactory in their ability to only give 90 degrees of a knee bend. Furthermore, the ankles are simple ball joints that don't utilize the Zaku II and Zaku I ankle system, so articulation is limited to a ball joint. The most disappointing part of the Gouf, however, is a lack of torso and skirt movement. The torso doesn't move whatsoever, and the only "replacement" is that the peg for the legs that connects to the body swivels on a polycap, which is a poor replacement for a moving torso. The peg swivel for the legs is bad enough, but the Gouf also doesn't have moving skirt pieces. For Zeon MS, skirt movement is very important, as they have huge skirts that almost cover half of the MS's thighs, so leg movement is even more gimped. I wouldn't be complaining about this much if this hasn't been done much better earlier. The Guncannon, AKA the first HGUC, HAS moving frontskirts AND torso! Even the Gyan had the option of pulling the "leg peg" outwards slightly for more leg movement! The Gouf has no excuse for this articulation disappointment.Accessory-wise is where things start to look better, though not by much. The Gouf comes with a Zaku Machine Gun-Kai, but it is somewhat gimped by how the side-handle works. Unlike modern kits with a gyrating handle, the Gouf's gun has two pegs on the side handle for a 90 degree or 180 degree attachment. The pegs look ugly and really shouldn't be on this kit. Again, earlier Zaku kits had already perfect the Zaku Machine Gun. The Gouf shield is OK, but it requires a layer of light blue around the border for true anime accuracy, and I'm disappointed that Bandai didn't just cast the shield in light blue and gave us a sticker for the dark blue on the shield, and I am not willing to try and concoct a blue that matches the plastic. The shield can also only attach to the forearm in two positions, making it so that the arm cannot bend at the elbow if the shield is to remain facing forward without being awkward. A Heat Saber is included, but that too requires painting the entire blade orange. However, I will say that it stores nicely in the shield. Finally, the Gouf includes two Heat Rods (whips) that can be held in the right hand and attached to a gauntlet on the wrist. The rods look great and come in both a straight position and a curved one for display. However, there are only 2 hands included for the Gouf's right arm. The left hand is a machine gun, and the 2 right hands are a pain to split open and fit stuff into.Overall, Bandai surprised me with their decision to release a Gouf before a Zaku II or, heck, even Zaku I was on the drawing board. The Gouf's tagline since the late 70's was "Powered-Up New Model", and from the looks of it, it is severely lacking compared to both the Zaku II and Zaku I, the suits it was designed to replace. While yes, if one wants a Gouf to just stand there, this kit looks great, it fails trying to do any sort of action pose due to the lack of a moving torso. If the kit had a moving torso and some adjustments to the shield and Heat Saber, I'd say it aged very well. However, as of now, the kit just isn't aging too well.Don't get me wrong, I love posing the Gouf around, its just that the lack of posing options really frustrates me. I'd recommend the kit as a great beginner's item. 4This is no Zaku. It's a great kit even for its age. I like it despite its flaws. 5Great project !It is so special to my boy. He loved that the packaging had all that Japanese on it ! It was pretty simple to put together and he is really enjoying it ! 5Thats no zaku boy! No zaku! The package came promtely with no problems. The kit itself is great easy to pose, snaped together well with only 1 seam gap in the thigh and all the joints are tight. 5
