Great light sticks but red is not as bright....I love these light sticks overall. The green ones are very bright and usually last for 24 hours or more when I use them but they do dim over time and are not full strength the whole period. These would be great for power outages, camping trips, survival situations, etc. The red ones being reviewed now are not as bright as the green ones but will do the job. I prefer the green ones.I recommend them to anyone to buy, especially if you can get them on a lightning deal as I have seen them on lightning deals several times for several dollars of the normal price. 3Nice chemical lightsSuperb chemical lights for all sorts of safety uses. We like the choice in colors available as well as 8 or 12 hour versions. Use them for emergency markings on roads, helicopter landing zones, field parking situations, warn of tent guy lines, mark other underwater SCUBA divers, mark other parachutists in the dark, emergency use in the dark if no flashlight is handy, mark rendezvous locations, etc. 5Lower light than other colorsThe Red is about 20% the brightness of the Greens and Yellow, not enough to read by.I compared the six colors in both Military and Industrial, see images for more information. Overall, I did not notice a significant difference between the Military and the Industrial grade. I do like that the wrappers on the Industrial ones show the color clearly, while the Military has only the name of the color. I've found that they last the time advertised, note that the white and blue ones are rated for less time than the others, 8 hours vs. 12. (There are other models with differences in brightness/duration). The brightest ones by my measures, were the Yellow and Green ones, followed by the Orange ones. Red, Blue, and White would not be bright enough to read a map; but are good for marking things in a campsite or elsewhere. Other uses: give each child a different color so you can locate them easier, marking different hiking or skiing trails, or use different color to locate first aid/water/etc.. 4Ok.... Green is WAY BrighterI was kind of disappointed with how dim these are. The green ones are way brighter during the night. I use these on emergency scenes to replace the old fashioned incendiary flares, and the expensive LED flares. If someone runs one over no big deal. However like I said, the green ones are way brighter and better to use. 3Well it puts off light!Finally got around to testing one of these out (with a true use purpose in mind!). I placed one in a tree nearby to where our goat pen is, just to put off a bit of light source until the solar lights I ordered come in. These, as others have said already, are not exactly the brightest in the world and provide just enough light so that you can see in the dark, in a pinch or if you need some small amount of light while setting up to hunt etc. I would have to believe that if you are truly wanting to use these, while putting off a larger amount of usable light that either the orange or yellow ones would be more along the lines of what you would want. Usage is childishly simple, you bend them to you hear them snap, shake them for about thirty seconds and deploy them where you want to or even carry them if necessary. The top has a small, built in plastic hook, allowing you to easily hang them from a thin tree limb etc. I'm overall happy with the purchase and knew I wasnt getting a "flood light" when buying them, but a bit more light would have been nice. 4On the good news frontThey're much dimmer than I'd hoped. I knew the red wouldn't throw as far, but these are dim enough that I use them more for marking than illuminating. Ambient temps at the time ranged from 60-70, so not cold. On the good news front, they seemed to glow for a really long time. It's nothing really wrong with the product, just a mismatch of expectations. They do serve very well for marking hazards in the dark, such as guy lines. 4Great quality works great... follow instructions on how to use them...i have seen this light Sticks (not these brand) in Home Depot for about 3 bucks a piece, these are far more cheaper in price than those. I was wondering.. why?.. and when they arrived, i open them and used one. it works great and gives a good amount of light.I have these in my car, and used 4 of them.. one night while towing a trailer at night, one of the tail light broke of and used 2 of these as a quick fix for the lights in the back of the trailer. I drove for 4 hours, never got stop my the cops, and they were still lite for half the night (at least until we went to bed).. on the return trip used another 2 ..I have bought 2 sets and have them in my car for emergency lighting. 5A bit underwhelmingThese aren't nearly as big or as bright as I thought they would be. For illumination, you're better off with a good flashlight. Not sure If anyone would see these on the road at night if you had a roadside emergency...? Maybe as a signaling device or to mark people so they can be seen in low light, but not much good for illumination. 3Safe for Astrophotogrpahy in the darkest of nights.I bought these sticks at the last minute to be used on an astro-photography trip over the July 4th weekend 2016.I was a little worried that these might be a bit too bright for the area we would be in, since the nights tend to be quite dark and its easy to ruin your night vision with any light thats too bright.I am glad to say these worked well. We used these on the ground as markers to avoid bumping into cameras on tripods, or large telescopes on the darkest of nights. they lasted the entire evening. I bought several boxes just in case, with the plan to use any left over for future trips.I probably used six of these and all worked, as described. So if your an astrophotograher looking for a simple solution to avoid bumping equipment or marking an area in the darkest of nights, this may be a solution for you. 5Red Isn't For Late Night Picnics!Having spent 32 years with the military, I'm quite familiar with "ChemLights" which is the military term for these 12-hour light sticks. I noted that one reviewer was less then happy with the illumination capabilities of the red ChemLights. Yes, if you're looking to illuminate a large area or even a two person tent in a safe and secure area, red is probably not the best choice in colors. On the other hand, if you're looking for a ChemLight which doesn't draw as much attention to your position and is more difficult for animals and humans to see, red is the preferred color. It's for up close and personal use such as map reading or marking a location without becoming a light house beacon. It also does not attract as many - if any - night time animal and insect visitors. If there's information to be considered in this review, it's suggested that selecting a color in ChemLights should include an assessment of situation, application and desired results. 5
