Customer Reviews

Price per mini is crazy goodI bought these and painted them for dnd. They painted up very nicely. 5Seems to be good for beginners (and supposedly more advanced players but I can't speak to that). My son (high school freshmen) is just getting into Dungeons & Dragons and he really likes this board game so far. He has always wanted to learn to play but didn't know anyone who could show him the ropes and lead the adventures/quests. This game works for beginners (but the reviews said it scales for more experienced players as well- fingers crossed). After the rather lengthy set-up the first time (there's a lot of pieces to punch out) he played it with a friend and they were able to figure it out and really enjoy it. The first game (set-up and figuring it out) took quite a while but the second game the next day went much faster. So I can tell you that it is good for beginners for sure and I'm hoping that it scales as they get more experience. 5Worth every dollarWe were so torn about getting this as my husband hates board games and I m new to D&D. But... really wanted something we could play together. Decided to start with the first released. The moment it arrived we busted it out and played our 1st adventure! A lot of fun and very true to the rules of D&D without being too confusing. The miniatures are really well designed and we are excited to paint them. Played our 2nd adventure today; the rules made more sense and the game was very challenging. The co-op aspect really makes it enjoyable. We will definitely be getting the other games. 5This game is awsome it oozes the undead and vampiric theme and is more balanced and challenging a bit more than the others which I really enjoy. The characters in this game are more set ...So I bought these games in reverse order this being my last one to pick up and now own them all. I have to say this one has been one of my favorites and a close tie with Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt. This game is awsome it oozes the undead and vampiric theme and is more balanced and challenging a bit more than the others which I really enjoy. The characters in this game are more set up for team play synergy/support of each other where as Ashardalon and Drizzt have more powerhouse individual stand alone characters. If your going to get any of these games I would recommend the first 3 after that not so much Temple of Elemental evil is ok but the campaign mode is a bit broken, it becomes to easy after you level up/upgrade. I'd just pass on tomb of annihilation as the quality of the minis and the characters were very poor and cheaply made in comparison to the other games pre painted or not and the ToA campaign alone can't make up for it. Im glad that I bought these in reverse order as I was impressed more and more with each game going backward and ending with Ravenloft I couldn't have asked for more it is a great game with a great theme and has great quality minis and characters. Ravenloft is definitly one i would recommend along with Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt if your considering buying one of these Dungeons and Dragons board games. 5Go in with an open mind and you'll have a great time!I'm a 25 year old geek who has plenty of experience with card games, tabletop games, and RPGs. First off, I love this game. I rarely take time to review anything. In this case, I have seen a number of reviewers who were a little harsh based on their expectations. So, I wanted to add my two cents. What is Castle Ravenloft? This game is not the D&D most people are used to. D&D lite is a pretty good way of describing it and that's what I love about it. Castle Ravenloft is a much more accessible form of D&D for geeks and nongeeks alike. It's like some other reviewers have mentioned, it's a great game to sit down and play for an hour or two and is simple enough for people who have never touched this kind of stuff to pick up and learn pretty quickly. The best way to play this game is have a few beers, joke around about how screwed you are (the game is actually very difficult, especially if your Dragonborn fighter can't seem to kill anything), and just roll with it.There really isn't any role playing involved (unless your gaming crew decides to add it in). It's all about the D20 combat system (based around 4th edition rules) and quite a bit of luck as well. You slowly reveal the dungeon, battle monsters, get treasure, and work on accomplishing whatever goal you have to to win the game. It's a relatively quick and fun way to get into the D&D universe without having to commit hours and hours like you would with a normal D&D adventure. There are a couple of other things worth mentioning. For the price, you get quite a few miniatures. They aren't painted, but they would still make excellent figures for a DM to use in a regular campaign. If you're into painting, there isn't anything stopping you from painting them as well. The artwork and quality of the pieces is fantastic. The board, tokens, and most of the figures are sturdy and with proper care, should last a long time. Why didn't I give it a perfect score?-I would have liked to see more monster variety. Although, you can mix the contents of this D&D board game with the two others that are out to give you more variety of monsters and heroes.-There are a few figures that are a bit flimsy and could easily be broken if you don't store it right or you allow younger children to play.Overall, the game is well worth the price and I promise you if you go into it with a few friends, an open mind, and not expecting a full fledged D&D session, you will have a lot of fun with this! 4Great Value, Great GameMy boys 8 and 13 absolutely love this game. It's a lot like D&D but the structure of it helps keep their focus. Also you can actually use a lot of this stuff to actually run a D&D game if you want to. Heck, just for the great collection of plastic miniatures alone, this is well worth the price. Grab your paint kit and go to town with these bad boys making some cool monsters. And the game play itself, it's well designed, sort of a D&D 4e Lite but familiar enough for other version fans to still have a lot of fun with it. 5Not a FanThis is my first D&D board game. I m used to playing the RPG. There are tons of holes in the rulebook. Poor description of dungeon tiles. What s the skull for? What happens when there s a coffin? Poor description of daily powers, at-will powers, etc. Does your character have to use a power to attack? If not, how much damage do they do?If you re expecting to open the box and play, you ll likely be disappointed. I certainly was. Lots of good ideas for adventures, but playing with the same characters who max out at lvl 2... just lame compared to the RPG. 3Great Game - May Need House RulesWe have collected all of the D&D board games, and this is among our favorites. Stand alone games can be a few hours or you can do campaign mode which can last several sessions, much like a standard D&D campaign. Highly recommend for groups who never seem to want to DM but still want to play. The minis can be painted or left plain. They are excellently detailed, as are the player cards and other components. There are so many components we ended up having to use ziploc bags to keep everything organized. Great addition to a group who doesn't mind long winded games like Risk. We did end up having to implement our own house rules for things like traps which can sometimes bring the game to a grinding hault. Groups who are used to house rules will have no problem adapting the game to fit their group dynamic. 5Fun Game with Great MinisPrior to buying this game I had purchased Wrath of Ashardalon. Like all the Dungeon and Dragons board games they use the same game mechanics and play system. I bought my first box set for the minis figuring that if I played the game that was a bonus. I played this game with my son (age 7) and daughter (age 17) and we all had a blast. My son really enjoys these games and we play them about once a week. Castle Ravenloft is his favorite between the two mostly because he likes the fighter character included in the game. The game plays with a simplified D&D combat mechanic using only one 20 sided dice. I watch the YouTube Watch It Played video prior to playing so it was pretty easy to pick up and play. I found that even with the game rules you may still need to make some small "home rules" for specific events and how you read the rules. The plan is on evening when my home group is supposed to get together but we are missing a couple players we may play this game instead. The minis are pretty good. They are decent quality especially when you think about the fact you are paying about $1/mini and you get 2 large and 1 huge mini. I use these in the two D&D games that I run.Overall a great purchase for just the minis but I am finding that I am also really enjoying playing the game with my kids and hope it will serve a gateway to my son playing D&D in the future. (My daughter already plays) 5The Game That Started It AllLoads of fun. This is the first among the Dungeons and Dragons boardgames. As such, it feels perfectly balanced as a standalone set. You will be missing out on certain features and mechanics that came about in the later sets such as spendable gold to purchase treasures between adventures, but that's nothing a few house rules can't take care of.For those of you who haven't played the other boardgames, you don't have to own them all. Each one is a standalone game, but the rules, board pieces, cards, and characters are all interchangeable with each other. This game is a dungeon crawl, where each turn you explore a new room of the dungeon and deal with the things you find there - be it a monster, a trap, an encounter, or any/all of the above. It's fully co-operative; there is no need for one player to be a dungeon master who plays by different rules from the others and acts as the "villain," so you can even play this game solo if you really wanted to. The "AI" or rules for each of the monsters that you encounter in the game is determined by its card, so you don't have to worry about making people feel like they're being singled out (i.e. this game won't break friendships unlike Risk or Monopoly). It's very approachable and you don't have to have ever played a game of Dungeons and Dragons to understand or even appreciate it. On the other hand, this could actually be a great way to introduce people to D&D if you're so inclined, as the rules are distilled and simplified versions of the actual tabletop roleplaying game.A typical round of play, including set-up and pack-up, could last anywhere between 45 minutes to 2 hours on the extreme end. 5
