Customer Reviews

Invaluable expansion for a quality gameI purchased Castle Panic a few weeks ago after doing some research on cooperative board games. Games that allow cooperative play (Castle Panic allows for cooperative or competitive) are very enjoyable to play with the majority of people, even poor losers (and I definitely know some poor losers). The base game that The Wizard's Tower compliments is already an excellent game for 1-6 players in which you play cards to protect your castle from an onslaught of goblins, orcs, and trolls who are moving in to destroy all of your towers. There are plenty of luck elements, but there is also a fair amount of strategy involved in deciding what cards to play, trade, or discard in a given turn. The Wizard's Tower adds new (and more interesting) bosses as well as regular "minions." You also get a few extra cards for your main deck as well as an entirely new deck that you can tap into as long as your Wizard's tower is still in play. By discarding a card from your hand you can draw from his stack of very powerful cards. They might not always help your specific situation, but they are inevitably going to help you survive some dire situations. This expansion adds the element of fire, which burns building and foes. There are also flying monsters that are not vulnerable to boulders, swordsmen, or knights. Many other new monsters included in this set really make it a must have for fans of the original game. There are just so many new enemies to make you "panic!" Don't pass up on this excellent expansion to an already fun game. Although the price is a little high for a new deck of cards, monster tokens, and a bag for mixing up your monster tokens (very handy, by the way), I still think it's worth the price for the fun factor this wonderful package offers. 4I'm giving this 5 stars, but...I'm giving this 5 stars, but there is a consideration I've found that you should consider when deciding to get this expansion. The expansion on its own merits is great. It adds so many different levels of depth to an already fantastic game. The cards are well made and interesting, the new game mechanics are well thought out and make sense, everything bolts right on to the original game seamlessly to make it an even more fun. If you like Castle Panic, I think its safe to assume you are going to like Wizard's Tower too....butHOLY COW does it make the game so much longer! My 9 year old and I play Castle Panic after dinner some evenings as something fun to do before he goes up to bed. That is NOT an option when using the expansion. I thought maybe the first time we played was a fluke because we were learning the new rules, but after several evenings of being LOUDLY berated for keeping the kid up waaaaayyyyyyyyy past his bedtime because we started playing at 7 and were still going at 10 I have to concede that the expansion just needs that much more time.If you usually play with more than 2 people the game should go quicker than what I've experienced and if the players are generally older than 12 or so they should be able to keep their focus, just be aware, if game length is a consideration and the base Castle Panic game is about right in that regard, this expansion requires significantly more time to play. 5Excellent expansion to an excellent gameMy wife and I originally purchased Tower Panic on a whim, liking the idea of a cooperative board game. We loved it and played it with friends, but got bored with it eventually. We still enjoyed playing it, but there just wasn't enough variety. And this is why the Wizard's Tower expansion is a must for anyone that owns Castle Panic. One of my biggest gripes about the original was the lack of monsters; there are three normal monsters and 4 boss monsters that could make things a little more difficult. Wizard's Tower adds 6 megabosses (which you are recommended to add only 3 to each game), as well as many "normal" monsters. On top of this, it adds cards to the draw deck, as well as a whole new Wizard deck. The Wizard deck balances out the new, stronger monsters. Wizard cards are powerful, but if your Wizard Tower is destroyed, you cannot draw from the Wizard deck anymore. This creates a whole new strategy to the game: there is one tower that you cannot sacrifice without losing a huge benefit. You will find yourselves doing everything you can to save that one tower, even if it results in losing 3 others. One thing I always like to mention about this game: Try the variety games. One of our favorite ways to play, especially with a big group, is to play Overlord (which is where one person is actually in control of the monsters). We had 7 people playing and it was a great time. Here is my biggest recommendation: Do not buy this when you buy the original. Buy the original, play it a bunch, and find out if it you like it. If you like the original and just want a little more variety, then buy the expansion, you will not be disappointed. 5but the Wizards Tower deck has some awesome cards that make you feel pretty awesome when you ...This expansion really ups the gameplay on Castle Panic; the new monsters definitely up the difficulty level, but the Wizards Tower deck has some awesome cards that make you feel pretty awesome when you play them at the right time. Since you need to keep the Wizards Tower alive to use this deck, this adds even another level to the difficulty (and with some of the bosses that can come out of the monster bag now, you'll be in deep trouble without your Wizard Tower).Sometimes an expansion really doesn't bring much to a game and can be a little disappointing/not worth their cost, but I love the Wizards Tower. I definitely recommend. 5A big step forward for the gameI bought Castle Panic for its simplicity and it delivered. I have two boys (9 and 7) and they both love playing it and it is something they enjoy so much, the boring games like Monopoly and Sorry are a thing of the past. However, we never once lost the game. It got intense in a few spots, but it wasn't all that tough.Well, this expansion has made it tough. And that is a good thing. Sometimes too easy is stale or boring. And this game added mechanics such as imps, flying creatures, creatures immune to archer ring but slayed instantly in the knight ring. The megaboss monsters are fantastic. My only gripe is that they added player cards (which are all great), but now there are so many purple cards, when you play a one or two player game, you rarely draw the ring cards that do the actual hitting. If you expand to a 4 or 5 player game, it plays quite wonderfully and is well balanced. They have suggestions to take out specific monster chips for the expansion play, but we've found that if we are in those 1-2 player games, we add them all back in. We also use all 6 mega monsters. We do the whole kitchen sink. By adding the chips they asked you to take out, it does make the game a little easier because those monster chips aren't as deadly as the others and it gives you a greater chance of having draws which are manageable. But we feel that having all six megabosses balances it out.But THAT is the beauty of this game. You play it however you want and make it whatever you want. My youngest child struggles with the expansion as it is more complicated (more special rules) than the original. But that struggle lasted only 1-2 games. Now he is a master at castle panic.Forget about having dinner together, the kids never want to talk about their day anyways. Play a boardgame like Castle Panic...you will be chatting and gabbing so much, they won't even realize they missed out on their video game time. 5Great addition! There isn't much more I can add that hasn't already been said but this is a fantastic expansion and gives a level of new fun to our much loved and much played Castle Panic. My kids received coding toys, remote control cars and various other "fun" items on Christmas yet this was what they were most excited about. I have a hilarious pic from Christmas with my 8 year old twins playing this game all afternoon while their unopened programming sets sit in the background. Yep, you can say it is fun ;) 5A great variation to the game, but missing its bagGame night with friends brought this (and Castle Panic) to my attention. I loved it even though we got overwhelmed at the end and lost. Played a few weeks later and came out on top. Very well balanced game with lots of opportunity for different playthroughs. I purchased both sets to play by myself or with friends when they come over.I will say that apparently the instructions, pieces, new rules, etc that are added must be a little complicated because i just fully read through the directions to see if there was anything I was missing from my brief summary i was given and the 2 games I had played, and found that there were a lot of things we didn't know or had done wrong (like flying creatures can be hit by archers at any ring of the board). So maybe it's a little too complicated, but again, you can play by 'house rules' and ignore rules or simplify things (like how flames work) to make your game fun. If it's too easy, change it up with some of their suggestions. One thing that disappointed me was my friend had a monster and imp drawstring black bag with his set that I assumed I'd get. The instructions say a 'monster draw bag' is included, but my box didn't have one. Either it was left out or the plastic ziploc bag is what they meant, but i'll have to get some sort of solid bag to put them into so i can't see what is being drawn, and that's an extra few bucks out of my pocket. 4Great expansionAdds a lot to the base game. Maybe even too much, I feel. I love the addition of the tower and the tower cards, adds a lot of fun to the game. And the additional and new monsters are ok, most of them add an interesting twist to the gameplay. But there are so many, that it was kinda hard to keep track of what monster does what and how to stop them. Was constantly searching through the rulebook to find the answers, and it felt like it really slowed the game down.I'm sure after several playthroughs we'll start to memorize these, and next time we might even scale back the additions and do just a few at a time.Fun expansion though, worth picking up if you enjoy the base game. 4Teens have actually dropped their xbox controllers to play this!I run a monthly Game Night for tweens and teens for a local public library. In an attempt to expand the selection and diversity of the game selection, I purchased this game when I heard about it on a gamer podcast. The podcast gave it very good ratings and I figured, heck, its not that expensive... give it a shot.OMG... I have to play this at least once with the teens at the Game Night every month. They won't leave me alone until I do. THEY LOVE THIS GAME! It is simple to understand, almost all the basic rules are layed out on the aid cards and/or the board itself, the playing cards have fairly clear instructions on their actions/effects, and it's co-operative, so everyone is working together to win! I've never seen this much anticipation for a board game when there are video game consoles surrounding them! Teens actually drop their xbox controllers when they hear a "Castle Panic" game is being setup. Then the expansion came out and made it even better. Some rules are a little more convoluted, but there are aid cards to help remind players how they work. The addition of Magic Cards also adds a new dynamic that make the players think about what they are doing and what sacrifices are appropriate or acceptable. One someone learns the rules, the game runs quickly. Great Game 5Phenomenal expansion if you enjoy Castle PanicGreat expansion overall. To play the game it uses some monster tiles from the base set, but not all of them to mix together and draw from. The monster side of them are ever so slightly different that it is easy to tell whether the tiles are from the core set or this expansion, which is nice cause I like to keep them separated. I really like the higher difficulty of some of the new monsters and the wizard cards go well with them, as there are some real powerful cards. It adds a new element of strategy, which is not difficult to pick up if you're familiar with Castle Panic's rules. The burning aspect took a little bit to understand, but the rule book makes it easy to reference.I didn't even really notice the need for the monster bag before I bought this expansion, even though it is in one of the pictures, but I really love it. Historically, we have kept the tiles face down in the box to draw from, but now we can just toss them all in that dark cloth bag to pull from. And we don't have to make sure the are upside down and one doesn't accidentally flip over when drawing monsters and seeing it. 5
