NOT TRACKMASTER TRACKS!Completely disappointed that this track has so many different track pieces and has to be put together just so for it to work properly. There is no other creative way to use these tracks except for the way it was designed in the picture. You can't alter it any other way. It also loses alignment over time, so the train doesn't always make the leap successfully. The tracks are not even original Trackmaster tracks. There are 2 or three different curvy tracks, so without the directions, my boys have no idea which ones go where to complete the track. It took me literally an hour to put together Christmas morning. We've been collecting Trackmaster trains and tracks since 2008 and these are completely different and EXTREMELY difficult for 3-5 year olds to put together. Why did they change the way they connect together?! 1Really cool set! Just make sure you have the space for it!This is a really fun Thomas trackmaster set that provided hours of entertainment for my 3 year old Thomas crazy boy once we got it set up! I'll be honest, my husband and I were entertained by it too!Pros:Really fun to watchTrain goes around and around by itself without having to be completely manually reset every timeNot extremely difficult to put togetherTrains don't derail very oftenCons:Takes up a lot of floor space!!Some of the parts (3) have to be manually reset each time the train goes aroundDoesn't work with more than 1 car attachedDoesn't work with the track master trains that have the battery compartment attached behind themBatteries need to be fresh in trains to make it up the inclineDoesn't really work with more than one train on the track at a timeSometimes the trains derail on their ownIf you have the space for it, I would recommend this set. Price is a little high, but if you're looking at Thomas stuff, this is not news to you. 4Ignore black-and-white paper instructionsI put this together alone in under 2 hours by going to YouTube and viewing the Avalanche Escape Trackmaster Set video by Hulyan Maya. I simply paused the video so that I could see where each piece belonged because the black-and-white paper instructions that came with the set were worthless for me. I am a visual learner and don't like assembling things in general, but found assembly to be relatively straightforward once I determined the best method for me. The box was a plain brown box, but it does not matter since the set is now fully assembled to be enjoyed on Christmas morning. I tested the Thomas train and freight car that came with the set after assembly, and everything moves and works fine. The real test will come Christmas day when the boys get ahold of this. I may try to add more detail after they play with it for a while.UPDATE: Kids found it hidden under the kitchen sink on Xmas Eve soooo they played with it early. By the end of Xmas Day, my toddlers had reconfigured it to how they wanted it. This is a sturdy toy that holds up to their rough-housing. I like it, they love it. 5Impressive but ProblematicI wanted to love this train set, and my 3 year old son was excited to play with it, but I have to complain about the "impressive" cliff jumping feature. Hypothetically, Thomas is supposed to cling to the top of the track is it falls down, carrying him to the other side. Unfortunately, this mechanism only works in the most perfect conditions--which is most definitely not when the train has been set up on carpet, or any situation where a single track is slightly out of place. We don't have many wood floor areas in our house and I haven't yet been willing to give up our dining room table for this set yet, so we haven't used it much. The technology behind this track is impressive, but I would have preferred a simpler track that was easier for my son to use and didn't leave Thomas to fall off the track so often. 3My Grandsons Love It!Before I begin the review, I want to say THE ACCOMPANYING PHOTO HAS ADDITIONAL TRACK NOT INCLUDED IN THE AVALANCE SET. I wanted to enlarge the layout, so I added the Sodor Spiral Expansion Pack. It did not align correctly with the Avalanche set so I had to buy some extra track pieces. So, also buying the Deluxe Expansion Set gave me the connecting pieces I needed with quite a few pieces left over. The included track adaptors were a necessity to connecting the track sets together. I spent more than I originally intended but it gives the train a longer run and the smiles on my two grandsons faces made it money well spent.I have read other reviews for the Avalanche Train Set and I do not agree with some of the complaints. Here are some comments and observations that may help some.1. A few reviewers complained about the plain brown box . Well, this is what you get if you have the This is a Gift checked at the time you order it. My grandsons still did not know what they were getting until they actually opened the box. Prolonged the anticipation and excitement a bit.2. Some commented on the parts not staying together. If you assemble it correctly (assuming you have no defective parts), it will stay together. It should be assembled on a flat level surface. Thomas can make the loop without any problems unless the track is bumped, which usually happens when my grandsons turn Thomas off and push him manually.3. I agree the instructions could be better but they are far from being useless. You have to look very closely at them and not just start randomly sticking parts together. A case in point, the crossbeam on the smaller green trestle on the up ramp to the Avalanche, is not the same as the others. It has a rectangular (Chiclet size) protrusion in the center that snaps into a corresponding opening in the EC3 curved track section. It is show in the inset of the instructions but it is easy to miss. I spent some time trying to stabilize that section before I notice I had the wrong crossbeam piece. Some of the crossbeams are angled to accommodate the slope of the track. Make sure you have them oriented correctly. After assembly, you can test the alignment of the Avalanche tower by manually pushing it over to the down ramp. Reach into the tunnel and push the release flap and the tower swings back to the up ramp Note that there are two release flaps in the tunnel, one to drop the fossil rock activated by the open car and one on opposite side activated by Thomas to release the tower. . Make any adjustment needed to insure the tower meshes with the up ramp and down ramp tracks. testing again after each adjustment.4. When I place the fossil rock in its receptacle. I have to put my hand into the tunnel and hold the retaining piece in place. If you just drop it in, the momentum pushes the swinging bottom piece aside and the rock falls all the way to the track. Perhaps yours may work better. In the same vein, the open car has a flange on the side that triggers the drop of the rock to the rail car. The car has to be hooked to Thomas with the flange on the left side.The set does not appear to be a big drain on the batteries. Even with the use it has been put to and the extra track I added the batteries show no sign of needing replacement.. It seems to be well made but time will tell about durability. I think this is a great toy and I would recommend it. I was undecided about 4 or 5 stars because of the shortcomings of the directions but watching my grandsons play with it convinced me to give it a 5. 5I find that the Thomas the Train brand is more expensive than it's worth but whatever makes my son happy! I do appreciate that tMy son LOVES Thomas the Train, any type of train actually. In general, I find that the Thomas the Train brand is more expensive than it's worth but whatever makes my son happy! I do appreciate that the instructions are very easy to read. They include an inventory list of what should be included with your set, with pictures. I was able to put the set together pretty quickly. When we tried the included train, we found that there are a few frustrating things about the toy. For one, we found that the bridge had to be angled just perfectly in order for the train to catch the tracks and prevent it from falling off. It also had to be angled just perfectly so that it continued on the track on the other side of the gap. This is frustrating because the pieces of the bridge do not connect to each other. They are all loose, so you have to wiggle them around an inch or so here and there to finally find the perfect positioning. I would recommend that the three pieces that hold the bridge be connected together so that it stays in the perfect positioning for using the toy correctly. The second frustrating part is that the yellow railing on the left side tracks would sometimes cause the train to get caught and stop it. This happened mostly to the more bulky trains. Overall, my son loved it so I gave it 4 stars. If it was better made, I would give 5 stars. 4Fun set once you get it togetherThis is fun and a big set, but be careful when ordering the "frustration free package". If you do you'll get no box with the picture on it. And that color picture can really help you since the instructions are in black-and-white. I had to grab my ipad so we could look at the Amazon page to figure it out. It all fits together fine, but it goes together just a bit quirky--sometimes it seems like it should be a different piece, but it all works together.The kids loved it once it was together. You can only send the train one way because of the collapsing bridge. But the bridge and the rock drop are fun and well thought out. If you get the timing right, you can have two trains going.It does come with connectors between these newer tracks and the older. I think the newer track isn't as good as the older, but it works. The newer track feels like a cheaper plastic, but it does hold together better.Overall, there are a lot of things to do. You have to keep resetting a number of the items once the train passes so it's not just a passive set. Sadly because the tunnel resets the falling bridge, it's not really possible to rearrange the set without loosing the fun bridge.The kids like it, it works, and it's well thought out. It loses a star because the track really can't be rearranged much and the track isn't as nice as the older track. But it really is a fun set so I can't take off much. 4Please avoid this! It's a failure on so many levels... even when put together by two competent adults.I have not posted many reviews on Amazon, but after my initial experience for this miserable excuse for a toy, I felt that I needed to do my best to warn people away. While my young son has had lots of fun with many other Thomas products, this was simply awful. It's worth noting that this was a brand new set, right out of the box, and I installed brand new batteries in "Thomas," so he/it was not underpowered.PROS:1. When it works properly - which is rarely - it is kind of cool.CONS:1. The instructions are pretty much garbage. My wife and I - both of whom are fairly sharp, if I may say so - took a while getting through the instructions because they just weren't detailed enough. There were numerous times in which I had to go back through and swap out one little component for another further down the track because the instructions hadn't made it clear which piece really needed to go where.2. It took a LONG time to align the track so that the pivoting "gap" piece would work properly. My son just stood there watching as we went through failure after failure after failure. If you hook the sections together using the large, sloppy "tabs" that are made to join them in the middle, your set will almost inevitably fail.3. The instructions explain that not all other Thomas and Friends trains will work with this set. I think that what they really meant to say was "Thinking of using any trains other than this particular Thomas that we're including? Yeah, good luck with that." No other trains in our collection would clear the "gap" properly without falling off. Heck, none of the other trains would even activate the pop-up "scrap monster."4. Oh, yeah... speaking of that "scrap monster," I hope you're ready to push it back down after every time it pops up. It's not built to automatically move back down after each activation.5. The "fall-open" bridge also does not reset on its own, and folding the sides up each time gets old REALLY quickly.6. It comes with a couple of extra train cars to tack onto the back. We have yet to get Thomas to make a successful run over the "gap" while pulling either car, so they are useless.7. One of the cars is a flatbed made to catch the "fossil" that drops as he goes through the little cave tunnel. Don't expect the fossil to ever properly make it into the train car; ours never did, even after several attempts.8. Even when there are no extra cars being pulled, and everything seems to be lined up perfectly, and Thomas has made a few good runs around the track... he will inexplicably fail at the gap. Sometimes he'll get to the top of the incline and then suddenly scoot backwards all the way to the bottom. Sometimes he just won't clear the gap. It's extremely frustrating.9. Oh, yeah... there's a bit of curve (where the track "switch" is, just after the cave tunnel/fossil drop) that Thomas simply would not clear without completely derailing, no matter how many times we tried. I finally had to prop up that section of curve to give it a bit more of an "incline" so that gravity could help the train go through it successfully. A properly designed toy doesn't need anything "extra" to make the curves work as they should. Horrible design.10. In the time that it took me to write this review, our son, in his frustration, almost completely dismantled the whole thing. I have a feeling we'll be boxing this up and sending it back. This is an absolute atrocity, and I am amazed that it made it through QA. Major, major disappointment here; unless you have a major masochistic streak, I advise against purchasing it. I am genuinely sorry that I did. 1Fun Set, Sucky Assembly InstructionsI got this for my 8,5, and 2 year old boys. they are big Thomas nuts. I can say that if you want a train set that is easily put together then you might want to move on. The instructions can barely be called that. It is easier to look at the picture and get the idea on what needs to happen then to go by the instructions. Be ready for constant derailing as the decline is very steep (the trailer to the train derails more than the train). It is pretty neat though to watch as an adult for about a minute. The kids play with it quite a bit. If you have the older trackmaster trains, they are sort of compatible but not really. Most of the time when they get at the top they are supposed to be stopped by the little stopper, but I noticed the newer trains have a deeper catch on the bottom than the old ones and the old ones tend to keep going and plummet to their deaths. The newer trains are faster though and I like them better anyways. The set takes up about 5' x 2' of space so make sure you have plenty of space available for them to play on it. The only problem that I had with it was that it came with a turn piece missing. I was able to fit a different turn piece in from an expansion pack so no big worries there. 4DON'T BUY! Neat concept, terrible quality and executionThis is a terrible quality toy, and shame on Fisher-Price for even selling it.1. Tracks were warped out of the box. They don't lay flat, and in some cases the elevated track supports are held off the ground by the warped tracks.2. The rail car was not tall enough to set off the boulder drop. It doesn't even come close to hitting the lever.3. The pivoting track wouldn't line up with either side of the track until I shimmed the supports on each side. Then it still occasionally won't reset properly and the train will drop off the track rather than swing across.4. The "new and improved" track and connectors are a joke, they are way worse than the old style, which were stronger and sturdier, and wouldn't pull apart when my son trips on the track.5. The included train car won't work properly on other tracks. It hangs up in the undercarriage. There is a piece that keep thomas from sliding off the pivoting track, but it also hangs the train up on just about any other style of track.6. No other train car will work on this track. It will either not make it up the steep incline, or if it does, it will not engage the train stop on the pivoting track, and just drive right off the end.7. The train will jump the rails about half the time on the switch track piece. It also occasionally will jump the rails on the downward slope after the pivot. It happens more often with the train car attached. 1
