Customer Reviews

Two Disappointed TeachersSo very disappointed in this. My husband and I had planned on playing it with friends and tried it out ourselves first. The "board" is in so many pieces that it was practically impossible to keep it all together with chips on it, etc. I love the idea of the game, but it is not functional. The "board" which reminds me of a long slew of bingo cards, is way too long to be playable even on a good sized table. What a waste of money. Wish I could get a refund. 2Five Starsexcellent extension of scrabble for more people 5Like Scrabble, but more funGenerally play the sidewinder version of the game where you need to build a chain of words from any side of the board to the opposite side. The board is created by putting 16 5 letter by 5 letter cards down in random order to form a square. All of the cards are 2 sided so there are millions (maybe even billions) of different boards. This really enhances repeatability because shuffling the board makes a whole new game.Game play proceeds by players laying down clear chips to highlight the letters they are using for a word. Words can be created by linking letters horizontally, vertically or any diagonal, they just need to be linked in order and each letter can only be used once. Generally over 10-15 turns a player is able to make it across the board, which takes about 15 to 20 minutes. If a player is making the journey too quickly, other players can create words in the way in order to make the other play go around the words, if they can find a word.Only problems with the game is that some cards have self contained words, meaning that a words is completely present on a card making it less random, and the 3 players is an odd number. It is not often that I only have 3 players around my table and not four. Adding a four player would likely throw the balance of the game off.Over all, if you have a word game lover in your group this is the game you need to get them. It is simple, yet very fun. 5What a Different Game! This is not like any other word game I could imagine. It has a ton of strategy. Finding words is only a part of the challenge. Where you find them and how you have to often block your opponents is the key. Wow. It's like a marriage of Boggle and Risk. Cool! 5Game Gumshoes Presents: David L. Hoyt's Word Winder by HL GamesDavid L. Hoyt's Word WinderMFG: HL Games#of Players: 2-6Age Range: 8+Overall Construction: This game is unique from other word games partially due to how it's made. In Word Winder your board is a series of tiles(16) that you can configure any way you want. Just a word of advice, if you choose to use the whole board you will need plenty of table space. Each tile has 16 letters and is dual sided. Then for each of the up to 3 players or teams you get a plastic ramekin and a set of different colored bingo chips. I wish these had been the magnetic kind but this helps keep the colors divided & the cost down. I do recommend that if you plan on traveling with this game to purchase some small seal-able baggies to put your chips into as they do not stay in their ramekins during travel(found this out the hard way).Gameplay: There are two methods of play.1. There is the Side Winder set of rules. In these rules you will work to be the first player to have a continuous string of words from top to bottom or from side to side on the board. Unlike Scrabble you don't have to start at the center. You can put your words anywhere you want.Your words can also wind in and out of themselves as long as you place your chips in order as you spell the word. The two things you have to remember when making your word is that your letters in your word have to be touching to go from one to the next, this means your letter can be in any direction from the previous letter in the word so long as it is within the surrounding 8 squares. The other thing is that you cannot reuse a letter in the same word, but You can use letters from a previous word you used to help create a new word. In either case I recommend trying to use as many new letters as you can since you are trying to make it across the board and your word only have to touch, not connect.2. Game style 2 is called Race Winder. Same basic rules as above but now you can win by preventing all opponents from reaching the other side of the board. Kinda like the way you win while playing Snake or Blokus.Yes/No Recommend: I do recommend this game because I feel it stretchesstretches your mind and vocabulary. I will warn you that if you try to play this with people who love to play Scrabble they may get a little bent out of shape. I tested this initially on my mother and sister who always call me to make rulings on words they try to use while playing Scrabble. It did not go over well because they had trouble adjusting to the amazing free form way of playing. They also had to meet a goal other than, run out of tiles. With the amount of tiles and the way you can arrange them, the chances of having to play the same exact set of board configurations is almost impossible, so lots of replay value. By the game makers calculations it is possible to have 28,689,200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different board configurations. If you are a fan on word searches like I am this game will be fun and challenging. If people are getting disappointed that they are struggling to find words and you are just playing for fun you can do like the creator of this game did with me and throw out word recommendations to your opponent that will block your moves. To find out more visit their website. Also see our video review at http://youtu.be/HN5Ebz-wZbo 5Scrabble on jet fuelHow the game works is you put the game board together like a puzzle. Then you find words, like word search. Only in Word Winder your goal is to create a continuous path of your colored markers from one end of the board to the other before your opponent. This video will show you how to play. It really is a lot of fun. [...]I played in the Word Winder Tournament in Chicago. What a challenging and entertaining game. I am not that good at word games. I don't have a huge vocabulary. For this game it's not necessary. What is necessary is the ability to see words scrambled on the board and use that knowledge to make a path to the other side of the game board or block your opponents efforts to reach the other end of the board. 5The kids couldn't get enough of this!Played it over Christmas with the family and the teens loved it most. I was so surprised! They couldn't stop playing it even at midnight after I went to bed! 5Fantastic Fun! Lots of challenge! My 12-year-old son played this game while at the home of a friend and loved it. Could not find it at the store, but sure enough, Amazon came through! This game has all the strategy of scrabble, but puts the game in motion. You have multiple ways of playing, and since the cards are double-sided, you have many ways to manipulate the play. Fun for kids and adults. 5Five StarsGot this for a kid who loves game and can use practice on reading. It went over well. 5Fun game!We liked playing the game but there could be some improvements. The letter cards tend to move around as there are so many of them and they have to be put side by side on he table. Perhaps a plastic frame to fit the cards into would help. Also, the yellow chips don't show up well on the cards. We play Scrabble, and Word Winder adds a new twist. 5
