    Great twist on a classic gameBeautiful Chess set! What a wonderful twist on a classic game! 5Excellent Idea but a very small boardI was surprised how small this board actually is for 3 people. Otherwise perfect for those who know and love the game of chess. 3 Generations of chess players will be on this board which makes it special. I like the wood. I lived in Germany for a few years and appreciated buying the wooden toys for my kids. This says it is made in Poland...but it is remarkably similar to the toys I bought in Germany. I still have most of them after 30 years...one reason that I like wood. The latches do not look expensive, but they work and appear that they may work for a long time. I am very pleased with the product. 4Excellent set, perhaps a bit expensive, but worth itThis is a three player Chess set that appears to have been made by Wegiel or at least looks very similar to the sets I have and have seen from Wegiel.The set is fairly small and has that artisanal style look that seems to characterize Wegiel sets. The pieces don't have the highly polished reflective surface that you can find in high end sets; instead, they look like stained hand carved wood. I mention this because if you expect the high polish aspect, you may be disappointed, so you should know what to expect. I enjoy these Wegiel sets very much because they offer either interesting piece designs or, as is the case here, a nice board for a Chess variant that is not easy to find elsewhere.The board of this set is very nice. The insets separate the inside into three areas so that you can keep each set of chessmen separate. The brass latches lock the case securely. The chessmen are not weighted but have their bottoms covered with felt. They are fairly small - the tallest piece being just under 2". This means that there is not much place for intricate details, but the models are nice and clear and there are no challenges in recognizing or confusing pieces. Due to the nature of the board design, some squares are a bit small for the piece base, however, there is still enough space because of the elongated corners that you don't risk wondering what position a piece is seated in. The entire set feels very lightweight and would be easy to carry around given its compact size. If you expect to play this Chess variation a lot, you may want a larger board, but for occasional playing, I think this size is perfect.A quick mention on the rules - there are several rule sets for three player Chess. This game does not include any but you can easily find the rules online, for example, from Wikipedia - just search for "three player Chess". The site threechess.com describes one of these variants and also has a nice overview of the piece movement that should help you get started. The most important thing that you need to realize about this board is that the 6 central "squares" (I'll call them squares for convenience, although that's not their shape) are very different from the rest. The outer squares are all touching up to 4 other squares of the same color in their corners, as well as being adjacent to 4 squares of opposite color along an edge, just as on a standard chess board. But the central squares touch 5 other squares of the same color (to understand this, it might help you to think about the central point of the board as being both a corner and an edge for the squares that touch it - more precisely, it acts as two corners with an edge in between). This means that from those central squares you have 5 directions of orthogonal movement and 5 directions of diagonal movement. This alters in surprising ways the moves available to all piece types when they reach those squares.I think part of the attraction of getting this set is that it will allow you to explore various rule sets on your own and maybe even make your own. Also, while this is a Chess variant, it will play very differently to Chess and thus will offer a very different game experience.A final note on the price. I got this for $43, which is a bit expensive (it cost more than my smaller Wegiel standard Chess set that had larger pieces with more intricate designs), but this price can be justified by the more exotic nature of this set and by the scarcity of other alternatives (the only other one I found is this one: Portable Three Players International Antique Chess Set Mini Folding Magnetic Puzzle Board Fun Game Toys for Children).Bottom line: this is a very nice compact wooden set that can be used to explore the many three player Chess variants that use such 96 squares boards. If you have any interest in this Chess variant, you will like this product. 5Two's great, Four is better, Three's a crowd.Not easy to play and leads to more arguments about allowed direction than actual playing. It's quite small / portable which doesn't make it any easier. I didn't receive instructions which didn't help. 3Good Gift Idea for your Favorite Chess MasterThis was a gift to a grade school age chess player. He really liked it. Lightweight, easy to store pieces and fold away. And who knew this chess set was made in Poland? That's a fun fact all by itself. 5Too complicated game and too small desk.The quality is not as expected. The rules are too complicated and it is hard to place the figures on tiny squares. 2
