Customer Reviews

Pretty fun gameI think this is a pretty simple and fun game that almost any family could enjoy.Compenant quality:Pros:For the price of the game I am pretty impressed. I have bought games that were double the price and were lacking. The pieces or won good thick card stcock and the stones nice and actually pretty big pieces of wood about the size of a dice.Con: the game comes in what I would consider too large of box that also puts the pieces at an angle in the box on the shelf. Not a huge deal but I personally like things snug and not rattling around and ability to stack on the side.Theme:I think it is spot on theme that also adds to the game. There are too many games that just have a theme just because but basically could be anything and wouldn t change anything. This game is cool because you are actually transporting the stones and building pyramids which is cool.Game play:Basically I look for fun two player games that can scale up well but still be fun. As a two player game I want to love this but it doesn t play great as two player. There is a lot of player interaction and some take that stuff. 4Easy rules and set up, enjoyable but not too long playI am not a board game collector, I only buy games when I am fairly sure I am going to like it. After checking out the gameplay on Youtube, I was 80% sure this game was for me. After playing it a few times I am now 100% sure! This game is everything I like in a board game: very pretty look, not to many pieces, easy set up, not too long play time (20-40 minutes), replayable, playable by 2, easy to learn.I don't like to spend 30 minutes just to set up a game or another 30 for understanding the rules. Imhotep takes 1 minutes set up 6 minutes to teach the rules. The variations in the box makes it more fun and deep. It is very much enjoyable to play only by 2 players, most games aren't. The design is simply beautiful, and it doesn't take too much room up, you can travel with it just fine. I would say even smaller kids down to 9-10 years old can understand the game play and enjoy it... 5Decent game but chance outweighs strategyI like the easy concept of this game...each player takes turns getting stones from your quarry, placing them on ships, and sailing them to five different locations to get points in a variety of methods. The game pieces are solid wood or cardboard, so good quality feel (though I wish the playing cards were larger). However, it seems like the winning strategy is to always place stones and never ship unless you're forced to. In other words, no matter where you're sent you usually get some points, so why waste a move shipping when you can spend it placing more stones on ships (or gathering more for later turns). Since it seems luck plays a bigger part in this game than strategy, it's okay for beginners but lacks the strategy for more experienced gamers. 3Good but Takes PatienceThis game has a lot of potential, but the "grab it out of the box and go" factor is definitely not there. My kids love Ticket to Ride, Sushi Go, and some of the other easily accessible games and we'd hoped this one would be similar based on reviews. And maybe it is, but it was complicated to get into and the kids haven't gravitated to it since the initial attempts. Maybe if you're kids are little more patient it will be great! 3If you build it, the points will come.So you play the game by moving these really nice chunky bits of wood around on thematic little boats to building sites to score points. Just based on that description you probably wouldn't think much of this game, BUT it really is good. The game mechanics allow for a lot of strategic planning. You could move a ship full of your opponent's blocks to a site that is inefficient for them this denying points. You can reorder block delivery timing so you get more bonuses than your opponent on a given shipment. You could even leave you opponent with no play other than to move your block(s) to a site and score points for you. On top of that this game is really pleasant and nice to look at. The theme is beautifully held out in the components and game play.A very good little game that will be getting a good amount of replay in my collection. 5Which ship shall I put my stone on and will I get to put it where I want...I had been interested in this game for quite some time now and finally picked it up on the cheap during an amazon board game lightning deal. It is very quick to learn and one of those games where you only have a few options on your turn. Either refill your supply with three blocks, place a block on a ship, or sail a ship. I wasn't expecting as much take that style game in this but it can get downright brutal. In fact, I think in the 20 or so games I have played of it I have only gotten to sail a ship to a location I wanted my pieces at maybe two or three times. That is where the take that gameplay comes in. On your turn you can sail a ship to a location. The thing is that you don't have to have stone on the ship in order to sail it. The only requirement is that the ship has enough stone on it to sail (the ships typically require one, two, or three blocks of stone on them to sail.) So, your best laid plans can totally go south in this game. I would put this as a gateway game. Not heavy or anything but fun to play. 4Simple game for 2-4 players! This game is simple to teach and enjoyable to play. Players take turns placing stone resources from their supply onto ships. Ships may hold between one and four resources, and may dock at a port to score points. Players may choose to dock a ship with an opponent's resources in order to manipulate the game. The game can have a 'take that' mechanic, although it doesn't really hurt players since all ports have positive benefits. The benefits just vary. This can be a light game, or a super strategic 'thinky' game. Players can decide.Since all that is required is placing a resource on a ship, children of all ages can play, but I would say children need to be at least 10 years old if you want to integrate some more serious strategic thinking. The game has a great expansion that allows for multiple ports (ways to score) that will change the game up a bit. The base game has double-sided ports for scoring. One side is basic, and the other side is advanced. Mixing and matching the ports provides for many replay-able opportunities. 5Very thought provoking without being intimidating. This is one tricky game! You have near term, end of round, and then end of game points (6 round). You need to play strategically, but your opponent can move your cubes/selections to a location you didn't want.I've played with 4 and 2. With 4 players, it's pretty intense. With 2, I sometimes feel like I'm messing up the other person's game. You could definitely be "mean spirited" with this one.I think the best way to play is to play it as "what is best for me" and set it up so that regardless of which ship is moved, you generally can benefit. Like a "probability".Lastly, there are two sides to each "place" to put your stones. A-side is easier, B-side is harder. I appreciate the variety. And if needed in the long run, randomize them!PROs: Simple mechanics, VERY thought provoking, MUST think a few turns ahead. The other player provides the randomness by doing something unexpected. Components are nice.CONs: Cards are a little small. Box is WAY too big for the components. But it probably has room for the expansion. 5Great game and everyone can be involvedOur family got about 15 games fro Christmas, and this one was my favorite. It has a lot of choices but the turns go fast because you only get to do one thing per turn. Everyone can play, since the reading isn't too intense, and you can help little ones understand their choices without having to look at their cards, since there are none. But it's complex enough to keep an adult involved. And the alternate ways to play each monument makes for a lot of replayability. Not that turkey game that will sit in your closet. You will be getting this one to the table often. 5Elegant gateway gameI like this game because it's simple to learn but difficult to master. Gameplay is really elegant with only one main game mechanic. It makes a great gateway game for this reason. The rest of my remarks are addressed to those who consider themselves experienced euro gamers. This is a worker-placement game with an interest mechanic for doing the placement (sailing the ships, but your opponent if free to sail any ship -- even ones that have your blocks on them). This is almost a pure game theorist's delight; there's a lot of: if I do this, then he'll do that, but if I don't, then he'll do that OTHER thing, and then... The only significant randomness in the game is the bonus cards, but they are dealt face up into a shared pool at the beginning of the round, so from that point on, it's just game theory. There is also randomness arising from changing which ships appear in each round, but I don't believe that affects play significantly. However, I think that replayability is somewhat limited, so that's why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. The game intends for the reversible sides of the building sites to add replayability, but they don't really change the overall strategy that much. I've played it with my kids (12 and 15) 3 or 4 times, and I can tell that if it weren't such a quick game -- we can play it in under 30 minutes -- there'd probably be little enthusiasm for playing it much more. But it makes a good "quickie" game when we don't have time for something more involved.Summary: For non-gamers, this is a great gateway to "euro" style games. For hard-core gamers: buy it as a filler game, but don't expect to base a game night around this one. 4
