Description

  • My First Lab Mini-Duo Scope - My First Labs entry level STEM Microscope is a great starting place for a lifetime of learning. The Mini Duo-Scope is inexpensive enough for a child, but possesses an image quality good enough for adults.
  • Dual LED Illumination - This microscope features the dual-view lighting system originally pioneered by our Duo-Scope. The system allows youngsters to view flat specimens on a glass slide (lit from below) as well as three-dimensional items (lit from above). The low-temperature LED lights are safe, long-lasting, and durable.
  • Accessory Kit - With over 20 accessories included your child will be ready to get started right out of the box.
  • Coated Lenses - The Mini Duo-Scope comes with a proprietary lens coating that greatly improves clarity, a feature normally reserved only for expensive, professional-grade microscopes. This coating also prevents the lens from developing, retaining lens condition and helping to keep your kid clean.
  • Educational Investment - The Mini Duo-Scope is a great educational investment. Get your kids an early start on their scientific career

Customer Reviews

Fantastic!I wanted to get my neice (8 years old) something for Christmas that would expand her brain. I didn't want to get her the normal pink girly things. I was really worried she would not be interested in a microscope. Boy was I wrong. Once she realized what it was she was super excited and opened it up immediately. She yelled that she'd always wanted one. She started getting out the slides and the other accessories. I also got her another box of slides and she had them under the microscope too. I helped her several times to focus it and it works great. It's not heavy but it also doesn't feel cheap either. When I was shopping for microscopes I spent hours looking at different ones and their reviews. I wanted a kid-friendly one that wasn't super expensive in case she didn't like it. But I still wanted it to work great while not falling apart. I'm so glad I got her this one. If she really takes to it then I can get a more pricey one when she's a bit older. 5Not worth the moneyI bought this for my nephew to encourage his love of science. We couldn't get the light to work at first and once we got it working all we saw was a field of white, we couldn't see anything in the prepared slides that were included. I tried, my friend tried, and I reached out to another friend via phone who is a biologist and uses microscopes daily, even she couldn't help. I'm on the hunt for a new microscope to replace this one. 1A Great Starter kitI bought the MFL-20 as a starter scope for my 9 year old daughter. It works just as well as the expensive microscopes in my college biology lab. There are obvious differences, given the fact that the magnification isn't as strong and the product is made of lightweight plastic instead of metal. My only complaint is the fact that the overhead illuminator does not work. I believe the one I received is defective, but neither the seller (Gorilla Scientific), nor Amazon are willing to do an exchange. The refund option is there, but since I bought it on sale, the refund amount would not cover the cost of purchasing a new one. (There is a manufacturer warranty that I am currently looking into.) Overall, I would say this is a great purchase to get your kids into microscopes, but maybe purchase it from the MyFirstLab website directly.Edited to add that the customer service on the website is top notch. They replaced the microscope without hesitation. 4Works great.Works well. My 7-year-old daughter got it for Christmas and we have looked at several specimen (purchased separately) - when adjusted, you can see clearly. I didn't expect much for the price but these work as well as the microscopes that we used in high school. This does come with specimen - yeast and larvae eggs - and extra slides. I love science and wanted my little girl to love it too, so this was a good gift overall. She finds it interesting and so does my 5-year-old. 5I'm glad I didI ordered this for my daughter for Christmas, but couldn't resist testing it myself first. I'm glad I did. This sounds backwards, but I couldn't focus on the lowest magnification, but I could focus on the higher levels (odd). The "mini" size of the microscope means the light above the stage doesn't have a lot of height, which means it doesn't spread to cover much area. While it may perhaps be bright enough, the light only hits a tiny area to view. For me, it was too small. I also kept seeing the inside of the ocular and eyepiece tube, which was annoying. And my eye lashes kept getting in the way as well (although I read on other sites that wearing glasses helps prevent that problem with microscopes). I just couldn't get a satisfying view of the specimen. I returned it for the next model up for all these reasons, and to have glass optics. (This model has plastic optics instead of glass. I didn't realize that until after I purchased it.) 2Scientist ApprovedThis is not My First Lab, or second, or third. I bought this microscope partly as a joke, but mostly because I'm too lazy to get up and walk to the other side of my biomedical research lab to use our $300k microscope to check minor things. My First Lab Mini Duo-Scope is wonderful. I was surprised by the quality. Using one eye while focusing may be a little tricky, but it's nothing an inquisitive 6 or 7 year old can't handle. 5My First Lab K.O. Video games!!I can t help myself to squeeze out my super busy holiday schedule to rate this toy. I m a biology teacher in middle school. Selecting holiday gifts were never easy for me because there are plenty of choices out there that children will enjoy but just not as much as a new video game. I m searching for gifts that lead to enriching experiences, learning, and valuable family time. My First Lab Microscope has fulfilled all of my needs. I wasn t expecting that from a $25 toy. It s light weight so my children can easily carry it around the house. Unlike the heavy adult microscope I own, I don t have to worry them drop the item that will damage the microscope and my wooden floor. It comes with pre-prepared slides that capture my kids attention right from the beginning. I love their included accessories. It has everything we need to make our slides for the family adventure. My kids spend many afternoons with me at our backyard, Local Park and even on our kitchen floor to search for the exciting micro world. It opens a new view for my kids, and I don t have to take too much effort to pull them away from the video games.I have recommended this item to all of my friends and family. I will also recommend this item to my students if they ask for my recommendation. For $25, this is one of the best toy microscopes I have seemed so far. I m looking forward to seeing them come out more expansion, children s workbook and even online community where children can meet and share their adventure. One thing to note, this microscope require 2 AA batteries, and they are not included. Be sure to have the batteries before open the box to your kids, because they won t be able to wait. 5Best gift everThis was a gift for my 8 1/2 year old, and she loves it. She is constantly bringing stuff inside to look at in her microscope. It took her about an hour to get the hang of which magnification and light to use, and how to play with it to find the best view. She's a pro now after just a few days. It seems hardy. It is lightweight and easy to carry. Even though it is for children, it is definitely a "real" microscope. It makes me so happy to see her exploring nature and self-learning. We chose this one over the $60 regular duo-scope mostly because of the price, and I'm glad we did. This works great for our purposes. 5Yes indeed! We adore this scope! We have a 5 and 3 year old and they have fallen in love with this. There are some slides included and you can purchase more-but the most fun we have had is just putting things we find around nature under the scope! We found a dead bee and put it under and who knew their hairs were yellow?!? My kids are obsessed with finding things to put under the scope and it's easy for both of them to use. Not only that, but as kids do-it's been dropped several times but no problem as this scope is made for kids and appears durable! It has 3 different strengths of zoom and a light to be able to see well. It's not probably the best quality in the world, but for the price this is really a steal. Many toys are one trick ponies but this one fosters learning and can be used over and over again. Love it! 5We won at birthday with this giftWe bought this along with some extra slides (we got the creepy crawlies set) for my nephew's 7th birthday. When he opened the box he screamed, "OH MY GOSH, IT'S SCIENCE!" That's how we knew the present was a winner. He made us take batteries out of the television remotes so he could try it at the party. That's right, a seven year old boy passed up swimming and cupcakes and water balloons to look through this microscope. I can't blame him though. The adults at the party thought it was pretty cool as well. This product is definitely geared more toward children than some of the other My First Lab microscopes, and the price and color reflect that. That said, I feel like my nephew will get a lot of enjoyment out of it. It doesn't seem "dinky" or childish at all. We also like that it came with a number of accessories (extra slides, experiments, et cetera) that we really didn't even know we'd be getting. 5
