Customer Reviews

Great collaborative game for home or schoolI use this game during free choice time in my kindergarten class. Initially, you have to teach it, and help them learn about all the rules for rolling the two sets of dice. After they've played a few times, they know it and teach it to other kids. And there is some good learning in there re: even and odd numbers, and an option of getting the dice roll to equal 12. I LOVE how they get so excited to work together to beat the wizard. It's so different from competitive games. When they lose to the wizard, they're bummed, but they're together in losing and there are no tears. This is a great game for learning to take turns, talk about options/strategies, and work together toward a common goal. 5A great game for family and friends that has everyone cooperate and share in the success or failureA really fun game that kids can get into quickly. It takes a bit of reading the rulebook but once you get the point of the game its really fun and easy. All the players play together strategically. Everyone experiences the success or failure of a players turn, which makes the game great for everyone. It keeps it competitive without having very young kids trying to compete against one another. Fun for any age though as every game can be a win or lose. Takes about 25-30 minutes your game and then 15-20 for future games as you'll understand what you're doing. Our 8 year old daughter can't get enough of this game. 5We love this gameWe love this game. My kids are 8 and 4 and we have probably played it at least 20 times since receiving it just a few months ago. I thought it would be too hard for my 4 year old, but because of the cooperative nature of this game, he has no problem and the other players just help him navigate. We love the theme with the wizard, the potion ingredients and the pathblockers. The best part is, I love to play it too. We have quite a game collection but this one is by far our favorite. 5The Perfect Cooperative Game for Kids!I've played a lot of children's cooperative games and often I find that they are cooperative only in spirit. They have a rule that everyone has to win or no one wins, and while guided by an adult you can continue to share that point. Unfortunately, a young child who is falling behind the group can still feel like they are loosing even when there is no individual loss written into the rules.Cauldron Quest is not like that at all. This is a truly cooperative game where everyone is working toward a shared goal and there is no player token to track if one child is doing better than another. It is interesting enough that my children have played it with a wide variety of the adults in their life to everyone's enjoyment and simple enough that they can set it up and play a game on their own. They have even taught friends how to play. I love this game! 5Good game for smaller kids. This is a cute little family game. The gameplay is pretty simplistic, and there isn't a lot of strategy, but it's fun. It would probably be best for a family with younger children - I think 4-7 might be the ideal range. The way it works is that there are a certain number of pieces with hidden ingredients that are along paths to a cauldron, and there's a wizard hat that blocks those paths. These pieces are the ones that move. You are trying to get the right ingredients into the cauldron before the wizard blocks all the paths. To do this, you roll two dice to determine which ingredient you can move, or if you look at the hidden ingredients, move the wizard, or block a path. The strategy is in deciding which ingredients to move and look at, and there's a memory component in remembering which ingredient is where. It's very simple for adults and older kids, but a group of smaller children would probably love it. It's a bit similar to Trouble. 4Delighted by Circular Board and ThemeThis was a Halloween present for the kids. A smidgen advanced for the (newly-turned) 5 yr. old, who's an 'advanced' 5. The almost 7 yr. old picked it up perfectly. Both of them, as well as both of us, were pleased with the colors and graphics, which are simple yet complete bringing about a great fantasy theme for the game. We also own Race to the Treasure, which the kids also enjoy but Cauldron Quest is a much deeper game, and I think that it will have more long-term replayability for that reason. We've not won yet, and the game seems somewhat difficult without the aid of the adults pointing out which strategy should be prioritized at any particular time. I view this, however, as a learning experience and helpful aid for transitioning into older-child or adult games, where priorities are constantly shifting. I recommend this as a good family experience for 5+ kids with parents playing. It's quite engaging and we parents find that we're having fun with it too. 4Great game for cooperative playAfter owning this game for several months and putting it through its paces, I can finally give an accurate review.Pros: Super easy setup, anyone can play (as long as they don't try to eat the pieces), beautiful board and fast playCons: Other than wishing for higher quality pieces (plastic or better as an option) none. With my competitive 8 year old and my "loves games" 5 year old, I was looking for something that they could play together without anyone having a meltdown. I spent days at GenCon 2015 trying different games to take home for my kids. And strangely enough, I never had the chance to sit and play this as the booth was always busy. So after grabbing some information on the last day with my kiddos in tow, vowed to learn about this game. By random chance, I won a copy of this game. And honestly, I was going to buy it anyway from Amazon after reading about it.So on to the game. It's quite simple really. Everyone is working together to stop the wizard. And to do so, the group needs to make a potion with ingredients that are randomly chosen at the beginning. The group then plays to identify and move the correct ingredients into the cauldron to make the potion. Meanwhile, the wizard tries to stop the group from succeeding by blocking their paths. Simple, easy and lots of fun. Now my kids are working on naming each potion combination. I can't get them to stop. I fear my pieces will wear out before next year. But the best part about the game, nobody cries, screams, or blows up because someone else won. We all win or we all lose. Great team building for young children. 5A great cooperative game for elementary age kids.My kids ( 6 and 9) both enjoy this game. It is a nice cooperative family game that encourages them to talk through ideas during game play to work together to beat the wizard. The pieces are sturdy and have held up well to play. Instructions may seem a bit confusing at first, but once game play starts, it can easily figure out what to do. As an adult it isn't a bad game to play, very chance driven, but more fun than merely rolling dice and moving player tokens. My kids also had fun developing some adaptations and rule ideas to change the game up a bit. 5My 6 and 4 year old boys really like this gameMy 6 and 4 year old boys really like this game. A cooperative game is refreshing for us since the 6 year old naturally outmatches the 4 year old in most games. The premise is fairly simple for the adults, but a reasonable challenge for most 6 and 4 year olds. The adults will probably get the most enjoyment out of helping the kids. My guess is that in a few years we'll sell this one for more of a challenge, but for now it is a regular favorite. The pieces are excellent quality, the rules are clear, and the game mechanics are solid. It takes about 15-20 minutes to play, which is perfect for young attention spans. The game quality really shines if you use it as a teaching tool for decision making. Adults: refrain from taking charge! Guide the kids in making good, considered decisions! Let them make mistakes and help them learn from them. And have fun! 4lots of fun with my little...played for the first time with my little... we had fun! he loved the idea that we 'worked together'... he has been often worried about losing in games... ... not so with this one, we are a team.. i would say read instructions before you play. i thought i could work this one on teh fly but it would have gone smoother if i had prepared before having him play with . he is almost five and was able to catch on.. but there is number work with the 'magic dice' that is more for the 6 and up but he is learning this stuff anyway so the game supports that..I also liked that the antagonist is the Wizard and is represented by a hat that moves around the (very cool ) board... my son had so many idea about what that wizard was about! 5
