    Must have for teachersMy students (grade 2-5) are OBSESSED with this game. After borrowing the game from another teacher and seeing the HOURS spent playing and discussing this game I knew I had to have it in my room. The game is pretty straight forward and children as young as 5 have played without any extra help. Like with any game the rules are subject to variation but the general concept is to get the lowest four card hand possible. Skills it addresses include number recognition and number sense. It also uses many higher order thinking skills as the students must evaluate, analysis and make inferences based on card play. It can be a short game or it can take 10+ minutes. 4Best card game I've ever played, including the old standby's (rummy, pitch, hearts, poker, etc.)This game is a ton of fun for adults and kids. Perfect balance of strategy and chance. Individual hands take only minutes, but keep a running score to make it take as long as you want. I would highly suggest that you try playing with the simpler rules where you have 2 of your 4 cards exposed. Why? Well it easier for the kids and, ahem, the adults to remember their 4 cards as they eventually see them. Even better is that since the hand can be ended at any time, seeing 2 of someones cards gives you the strategy of trying to really stick it to someone if they have two 9s and are in the lead (you want a low score) even if your own score isn't super-low. Also, we allow the swap card to have no rules: any of your cards for any of theirs and it's fun handing someone a 9 for their 0 or a card you haven't even gotten to see yet for a 2 only to see you gave your opponent a zero later. Cards are cute and seem well made after moderate use. This game would be fun for adults too if you like playing rummy, hearts, pitch which it feels somewhat similar to. 5Great gameSimple to learn, easy and fun to play, even with mixed ages.The illustrations are fun, too!Basically it's a memory game. Each player gets four cards facedown. They get to look at two of their cards, but don't know what the other two are. Most of the cards are numbered 0-9, but there are a few special cards that let you peek, trade a card, or pick two. Each turn you either take from the draw pile or from the discard pile. You MUST trade that card with one of your existing cards, discarding it for the next person to consider. The goal is to get the lowest score. When you think you have the lowest, at the END of your turn you knock on he table and say "Rat-A-Tat-Cat". Everyone turns over their cards and the lowest score wins.The biggest challenge is that when playing with children, they don't immediately understand that "trade a card" doesn't allow you to peek at EITHER card.This game doesn't take a long time to play, and you can always stop the game by calling out "Ray-A-Tat-Cat" 5Great, quick game for ages 4+ and can accommodate multiple playersWe are a family that plays and owns a lot of board games and card games. This is one game that has appealed to all of our kids beginning at age 4, an age when there are few good games beyond classics like Chutes and Ladders or Candyland. Our older kids now continue to enjoy playing it with the younger ones, who often beg to play it after school and don't need an adult to play along. I also like that the game has some opportunity for different kinds of strategy and not just luck. It was recommended to us originally at our local toy shop, which is owned by a guy who really knows his games, and the game has also won lots of awards, so we gave it a go. We've since bought several more for birthday gifts and even to respond to our school's request to send in good "rainy day" games, which we thought the teachers would appreciate it because it doesn't have a lot of small parts, the game goes fast and can accommodate an odd number of multiple players, and the box doesn't take up too much room in the classroom.The goal of the game for each player is to have the lowest total score at the end of the game, based on four cards placed in front of each player, where the low numbers have a corresponding picture of cats and the high numbers are rats (and the middle cards are combinations of rats and cats); the cards are numbered 0-9. The gist of the rules: each player gets four cards at the start of the game, placed face down, and can look at the *two outer cards only* before play begins but must put them back face down. Once play begins, the players can't look again if they forget! (The instructions provide that players might keep the outer cards face up when playing with younger players, but we never did.) Each player therefore also has two cards in the middle that are "mystery cards" at the start of the game. Each turn, a player has an opportunity to either draw a card or take the card on the top of the discard pile. For example, if Player A draws a "2" and thinks that is better than one of his/her mystery cards, it will replace a mystery card with the 2 and discard the mystery card face up on the discard pile, always keeping cards in front of him/her facedown. But sometimes the discarded mystery card turns out to be a good, low number card, which can then be picked up by Player B. Watch out, though, because the game also includes a "Swap" card that, when drawn, lets another player swap a card with any other player, so all eyes will watch where a low discard card goes if Player B takes it, in case a swap opportunity arises! The game also includes a few "Peek" cards that, when drawn, allow the player to peek at one of his/her cards. As soon as a player thinks he/she has the lowest total, he/she knocks the table and says "Rat a Tat Cat!" and all players get one more turn before the game ends, and all cards are turned over and tallied.It teaches kids about memory, simple math, poker faces (don't look too excited when you see a low number or you'll be vulnerable to a lousy swap!), and the merits of different strategies, including waiting until a player *knows* the value of all his/her cards to "rat a tat cat" or be willing to take a risk and end the game early when he/she knows only three and hopes that the unknown "mystery" card is a low number. 5Lots of Fun for my 4 year oldI know the game is for 6 year old but I started introducing this game to my son when he was 3 year old. We started with 2 card face up, at the time, the game was new so he get excited seeing all these different fun pictures of cat and mouse and he has most of fun when I acted out with a words like "ill" whenever i see a 9 (the highest bad number) and throw out to the discard pile. He got the concept after a few play session throughout the month. I don't think this is his favorite game since i do have a lot of other fun games as well like Sleeping Queen (yeah it's for 8 but he likes it since he was 3), Too Many Monkey (very fun for the little one), Mermaid Beach, Go Away Monster (super fun game for little one), Catan Junior , Yantzee Junior (love this game), Sequence Junior (very fun game for the little one), Spot It Junior, Snack Attack, Mancala, Zingo, Kids on Stage, Slamwich, Skip-Bo Junior, Bugs Trail (love this game), and many many more. But this is one of my favorite to play with him :) After more than a year of having the game, he is now 4.5 and he totally get this game and play it very well with all card face down. IF YOU ARE AN ADULT PLANNING TO PLAY WITH KIDS, GET THIS GAME!I have been playing this card game since I was a kid. Twenty years later, it is still entertaining and fun to play with other adults. This is primarily a game based on luck - but, it does also involve a minimal amount of memory and an even more minimal amount of strategy.This is a great game for young kids - I imagine children as young as 3 or 4 could begin to play and would enjoy it for the fun pictures if nothing else. I began to play around age 7 and really enjoyed it.If you are planning to play with other adults, this game is okay. But, I might recommend other more strategy based games with a bit more growing room. If you are an adult planning to play with kids, THIS GAME IS GREAT!Overall, this is a fun game with cute pictures and minimal strategy. Great for kids and even fun for adults. 4one of my 7-year-old's favorite games.one of my 7-year-old's favorite games...he loves it because it is fast paced, fun, and he can legitimately win it. We love it because he practices his addition (his job is to count EVERYBODY's score) and he has to memorize things and focus and yet it doesn't feel like a chore. It is an added bonus that each game is quick (usually under 5 mins), doesn't take lot of space which means we often take it to doc offices, restaurants, and any place we know will have some wait times that we do not want to fill with electronics. 5Most popular game at Grandmas!My 4 year old granddaughter loves it. The minute she walks in my house it s can we play Rat A Tat Cat? . She is learning to add by counting the points on her cards. Easy to learn. Quick rounds so you can play as short or as long as you want. She even invented a version called Cat A Tat Rat where you try to get the most points! My 6 and 8 year old grandkids also love it. Great game. 5Cute, educational, easy even for little onesBought this for my cat-obsessed 6-year old. We've played it ten times a day for a month now. It was easy to learn. The 3-year old plays with us-- she doesn't know all the numbers, but recognizes that the rat cards are "bad" and knows which cat pictures mark the best cards. This seems ot be helping her recognize numbers, and the 6-year old practices math adding up all her cards in the end and figuring out who has the least. The illustrations are really cute. Great purchase. 5Relatively simple to learn, quick game play, fun for many agesOur family has throughly been enjoying this game... ages 3 to adult!! The three year old does get some assistance with adding and whatnot, but he definitely gets the idea of the game it also helps that the higher numbered cards have rats and the lower numbered have cats... so he knows if he drew a good card or not even though he doesn t know his numbers yet.Especially the 6 and 8 year olds love this game and sharing it with guests/grandparents when they visit. Even mommy and daddy have enjoyed playing a two player game against each other after the kids are in bed..!! 5
