Customer Reviews

Great Snakes for Protecting Tomatoes! We got the snakes about two weeks ago to keep animals away from our tomatoes. We went with these rather than the larger inflatable ones (that I noticed working at a house down the street) because the rubberiness seemed like it might make them more lifelike. Also, a smaller snake is a hungrier snake, and therefore scarier. We make sure to move the snakes around each day, and so far the squirrels/rats are still getting nowhere near the tomatoes. (Before this, we tried sriracha and the mammals just ate up through the bottom of the fruit to leave the skin hanging there.) The mockingbirds hold back as long as the snakes are positioned somewhat precariously so that any movement on or near the vines will cause the snakes to fall. We position the snakes on the ground so that they're visible from the air as well. The first week after putting out the snakes the backyard was virtually silent and all the tomatoes were ours! By the second week, the mockingbirds started going at the tomatoes again. My wife put out a bowl of water for the birds and started positioning the snakes so they easily fall if the tomatoes are disturbed. The rest of this week has seen no incident. If you want these snakes to deter birds in general, not sure how effective they would be. The doves are walking through the garden again, completely unfazed by the snakes. I think sparrows may also be taking dust baths alongside them. 5Best rubber snakes I've ever ownedWork well to keep the birds away from my garden and gazebo. The black/green body combined with the snow white exposed teeth and red toungue give these little guys an especially mean look. Keeping the birds away has the added benefit of helping to keep cats away. 5fools USPS carrier lady & some wildlife alsoFooled Ma Robin a bunch. I came out of she house & she was giving hell (accidentally put it near the nest). I don't know if it was the snake effect or she was PO'd because the (stupid male) snake was ignoring HER!People have asked if the pattern was on the bottom also = NO just like with a real snake.oh yeah, scared the crap outa my USPS lady ;) 5Birds Loved These SnakesThese fake snakes are billed "...to keep birds away." Within 3 hours of putting them out, where birds frequently nest (and destroy) our home, the birds were back at it - making their nests ON TOP OF these "scary" snakes!! I could NOT believe it! (I even attached a photo.) While these MIGHT work in some instances, it certainly didn't work here in NW Arizona, USA! 2Excellent snakes for my applicationI bought these snakes to scare birds and squirrels off the top of my bird care (for those not from Florida, this is a screened in porch like structure). The snakes are just the right size and they are flat on one side which means for my application that they stay on the top of the bird cage. I've tried plastic owls, hawks and sharp spikes along the top frame of my bird cage, but nothing has worked so far. squirrels can tear up a screen pretty fast and birds can make a mess on the deck, like you wouldn't believe. So, the snakes are my final attempt at a friendly solution. 5The secret to success with these snakes (updated)We live in a rural area and I'm tired of fighting squirrels AND birds to harvest what I grow (my tomatoes and blueberries in particular). Visited a mushroom "farm" a couple weeks ago and the guy had fake snakes all over the place. Every day, when he walks his property, he tosses the snakes to new locations. Since his property backs up to a National Forest, he had a terrible time with squirrel predation when he started his little eco-farm. Now, the fake snakes keep the squirrels away. YAY! I came home from that trip and bought a dozen of these snakes, painted them bright green with decorative enamel paint that you can buy for about a dollar a bottle, added bright red or yellow to the eyes (and made the eyes bigger) and even added some dull red coloration to a couple of the snakes. I move them every day and thus far, the birds and squirrels are giving my "crops" a wide berth. Received my second order of snakes today and have them painted and ready to go outside tomorrow. Why paint them? The bright colors and big eyes are easily seen from a distance, which means the predators don't come too close to examine them. The snakes aren't 22" long unless you stretch them out (and they won't stay that way) but they curl beautifully in and around the blueberries on the bushes and all through the tomato plants. Nearly scared my husband to death the first day I stuck them in the tomato plants! lolAfter pricing larger snakes and reading the reviews on them, I decided to simply "cut and match" a couple of these snakes to make one long snake. Wrapped the joint with duct tape and painted the sucker to look like a banded King snake. Looks awesome so I'm going to do that to a couple more tomorrow and will probably make the new, bigger snake a scarlet King. I'm having so much fun with these things I may order another dozen just to see how many different type snakes I can create. :)I plan to take up the snakes once the garden is done for the year. That way the squirrels and birds won't become accustomed to them over the winter. So, the trick is to keep moving these guys so the squirrels/birds think the snakes are real. And if you paint them a bright green, they stand out much better. Can't beat the price, that's for sure.UPDATE: Last year was the first time we actually harvested blueberries, pears and grapes from my little "yarden," AND we suffered zero predation with my tomatoes, thanks to these snakes. I stored them over the winter and they are back at work now, protecting my blueberries and tomatoes, and we will move them to the pears and grapes when those start to become attractive to critters. 5Too small for garden use.Much smaller than I had hoped for, but then the price was very low. They are not any thicker than a kids magic marker. Stretched out they may be 24 inches, but the way they are they are 15 inches from tongue to tip of tail. I had hoped to use them to keep the cats away from my lawn but they are so small they will get lost in the grass. My husband will probably mow them up! Might be a great toy or party favor, but useless for the garden. 3The strategy was recommended by one of the guys doing repairs on the ...I purchased these to place around my house to scare away woodpeckers and squirrels that had damaged the Dryvit on portions of the house. The strategy was recommended by one of the guys doing repairs on the house. He securely put them up in various locations around the house. They are small enough to not notice unless your looking for them but apparently the birds see them. After 2 months no new damage. Hopefully it will be a long term solution to recurrent bird damage. 5Perfect for scaring birdsWe bought these snakes in hopes of keeping some of the birds away from our kids' swingset. Within a couple of days of placing them in several spots on the swing set(rafters of clubhouse, picnic table, etc), the birds seemed to have found a new bathroom. The kids also love to gather them up and play with them while we are outside. After over a month outside in the rain and sun, they are still in great shape. Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase. 5Seems to have worked for woodpecker?!Nice for the price. Not really very big but they appear to have done the trick to scare away a noisy woodpecker. Just placed a few in the rain gutters and threw a few on the roof. Even though they don't move (except maybe in a heavy rain when they can get washed down the rain spout!) they appear to have helped with the incessant pecking on the roof and the metal gutters, usually around sunrise like clockwork! Has not been back for some time now. Research showed they are usually marking their territory with sound so maybe this one moved on. Hopefully he/she has! 5
