Customer Reviews

Our family has loved this game for years! This is a terrific family card game. We needed a replacement because we had worn the last set out. Shipping was dash, and the cards are coated differently. It's great, because even straight out of the box it makes them easier to use. Easy enough for an 8 year old to play, but fun for the entire family! 5an Okay purchasethese were ordered as a gift for my husband, and I SHOULD have paid closer attention to the Product Information - upon arrival the box was bent, beat up, and looked really bad, then upon opening the box the cards are tiny...Like 2 year old child tiny. This all left me quite disappointed and the package made it embarrassing to give it as a gift. Anyone wishing to purchase these cards should rethink it if they are going to keep them in the box, or give as a gift/present. 2Wimpy CardsThey look good, but they are thin and flimsy. They are the quality of dollar store playing cards. I anticipate they will only last a few months. Rather disappointed. These are NOT plastic coated. I'm going to keep looking to see if I can find a good deck. Hasbro should be ashamed for making such a horrible product! 1The cards in this version are too thinMy family has been playing a version of Rook (called One High) for over 60 years. I am glad the cards are available on Amazon, but the cards in this particular Rook product are too thin. I have also purchased Winning Moves Deluxe Rook and Rook 100th Anniversary Edition and the cards in both of those are much thicker and very good quality. I recommend them instead of these. 2directions are not very clear. We keep taking this ...directions are not very clear. We keep taking this out on a Saturday night, read some of the directions, and it goes back in the drawer. Maybe I will read up on the directions a few days before we want to play again, instead of 5 minutes before! 3This is a great game for family nightThis is a great game for family night! In a world of tech things all around we like to keep balance in our family so we unplug for a night of games fairly often. Rook is one of the games we play with our grandchildren when they come to visit. Everything you need is in the box including directions on how the game is played. The cost of this is less than the cost of just one person to go to the movies meaning the value of fun for the money spent is extremely high. 5Fun gameBought this game to play with adults and teenagers. Could not only play Rook, but also was able to adapt another game, Polish Rook, with the game. Well made. Will be part of my game collection for quite a while 5Some great tips and variations on the gameAwesome strategic game. It's pretty simple to learn, not that far off of something like Trump or even Hearts, but there is quite a bit of strategy in the game to master it.I learned this game from some old timers, and their rules differ quite a bit from what the supplied instructions showed, plus we use different variations to change strategies, so the game never gets old. Some of our changes include the point system: 5 card = 5 points, 10 card = 10 points, 14 card = 10 points, and 1s (which are high) = 15 points, the rook = 20 points, and the final trick (the last hand) = 20 points, for a total of 200 points. This requires the taker of the bid to maintain control of the tricks to the very end, to get the final trick's 20 points. Some variations we use mostly have to do with the rook. We find most people either play "Rook High" (rook is the strongest card in the game) or "Rook Low" (rook is the weakest card of trump -- but still stronger than non-trump). But we added another one called "Rook 10-and-a-half", where it is stronger than a 10 or trump, yet weaker than an 11. This creates some very interesting strategies. We have also made some rule changes for when we have a number of players other than 4. We play "set partner" when we have an even number of players. Each team consists of 2 people, and the bids change drastically based on the number of teams trying to take the bid. When we have an odd number of players, or players that may leave or come to the table at any time, we play "call partner" where the bid taker "calls" a card (or maybe two if there's lots of players) as their partner. The partner is in no way allowed to reveal themselves until the card that was called gets played. In this type of game play, each player has their own score, and if the bid taker makes their bid, each teammate is awarded the amount of the bid. If they bid taker doesn't make their bid, all the other players get the number of points they collected as a team, and the bid takers get 0 points for that round. One more tip, we have found that with 4 people, the number of cards you hold in your hand is cumbersome. So we will often take out the 2s, 3s, and 4s. This doesn't change the strategies much, but it does make the game go faster, and makes the number of cards easier to hold. 5Too thin and have french textThese are too thin. I have been playing Rook all of my life and these are very noticeably thinner than any deck I have ever had. Also, these have both french and english text on the cards where it says the color. Not a big deal but I would prefer it was only english. Overpriced for thin cards. 2Missing my Rook partner! Great game of strategy and blind luck!My in-laws and my spouse and I have played this regularly for the last 5 years! My father in-law passed away this July and I've lost my Rook partner! Some of my best memories of him were of him giving me grief for bidding to get the cards in the middle in hopes of getting the bird" especially if I had a 14! We'd try and try to beat mama and my husband without a great deal of luck! We'd jokingly gripe back and fourth at each other for losing the round! We played so much that we'd wear the cards out! This is probably the 15th deck I've purchased! I got it to play with our niece and nephew, brother and sister in-law and mama over our time together this Christmas.Make memories with your family with this fun game!Love you papa! Merry Christmas!RIP!I MISS YOU!SHOOT THE MOON!! 5
