    Geat toy for building imaginationsI didn't give it a 5 stars because since it has only been played with a couple of times I don't know how well it will hold up. My grandsons are 5 and 8 and they love to build either a specific design or one that they create. The amount of straws and connectors make it possible to create something big or something more intricate. They built and building and then covered it with a sheet. They and their 3 year old sister were able to get inside and even lay down. The oldest said his school has a set that they play with some days. 4but my grandchildren enjoy building with it because they can build really large ...I bought this for my classroom and for my grandchildren. I never used it in the classroom, but my grandchildren enjoy building with it because they can build really large structures. The only drawback is that some of the straws were defective (cracked), and when something is built it doesn't always stay completely together. Sometimes the straws slip out of the connectors. That's why I rated it four stars instead of five. Would I buy it again? Yes, because my grandkids seem to like building with it. 4Still a go-to toy after over a year!My kids received this toy last year for Christmas and are still playing with it. The pieces are durable and the possibilities are endless as to what they can build. The directions that come with it are just OK. Some go together very well, but others seem like they could have used some intermediate steps included. However, there are tons more ideas (and more thorough instructions) online so you will never run out of things to build with this set.One point however, buy the largest set you can afford to buy. Some pieces need to be cut into halves, quarters, and eighths - which means fewer whole pieces to go around. The 705 pc set is wonderful, but we certainly have considered getting another one at times when the kids are itching to build something really big. 5Build imaginationsI bought this set because my son had tried it at school. My kids immediately started on a project when they received the set but couldn't finish because they ran out of straws. I couldn't believe that there weren't enough straws so I counted. Sure enough, we were quite a few straws short. But, Roylco is a great company to work with. The woman I spoke to was pleasant and professional and rushed us out plenty of straws (and some extra connectors). She also followed up with an e-mail to make sure we had received the package and were enjoying the set! I am very pleased with my purchase. My kids love to create with the straws and connectors and use their imaginations. My only complaint would be that their creations don't stay together very well--the straws and connectors slide apart fairly easily. Still, an excellent toy. 5Love the concept, not the productThis product gets 2 stars because the concept could be great. However, as others have said, many straws split when adding the connector- unfortunately if you don't put the connector in well enough the straws just fall out- even when bends are not involved. While building a bigger structure (like the ones pictured in instructions) seems like it would be great, but there is not enough stability and the straws come apart or split and it crumbles... Leaving kids frustrated. This product is a short term use product, by the way the straws are failing on the first use (probably a near 30% failure first time out), making it really expensive for what you get. I would absolutely return this product if I hadn't transferred right away to a storage container and gotten rid of the box before it was played with.1 star for product2 because of concept which I'd like to rate higher- please improve the product!! 2Great Fun For All AgesMy kids (4&6) LOVE this toy! We bought the smaller set first but my daughter who loves to construct towers and such complained (as she was standing on the counter topping off her tower) that there weren't enough straws so I bought this set for Christmas to add to their collection. We had a girl scout troop over the other day and all 11 girls were loving these as well - they made tunnels and climbed through them. The straws are pretty durable - my kids do have a habit of bending them in a way they shouldn't be bent so some are a little askew but we haven't had any break in half or anything like that. All in all I think it's a pretty durable product and I'm happy the kids are using their imaginations to build things together. 5Straws & Connectors: Great Construcion Kit!Our five year old loves to construct models using these colorful straws and connectors. She and her friends have made many different shapes--including shapes with curves as the straws are just supple enough to bend. Although the 705 piece count includes the connectors (accurate but misleading) there are still enough straws for a couple of children to make their own models, some of which are on semi-permanent display in the living room. Indeed, the number of pieces and ease of fitting connectors to straws to make models means that the kit will accommodate her while she grows and begins to make more complex models.The kit arrived on time and in great shape (packing was sturdy). 5Good toy with some flawsWe buy lots of learning/educational toys for kids and 705 pieces version reached couple days ago. Below are my thoughts:Pros:- Lots of pieces; enough for three Kids to create their own independent structures or work jointly on one big one- Good for all ages; elder ones can ask younger ones to work on smaller pieces to incorporate into bigger scheme later- Lots of possibilities; with some limitations on creative side (see cons below)Cons:- Straws have no "grooves" or "snap-ons". One shallow cylinder goes over a solid cylinder (male-female joint in technical terms). This means shallow cylinder will wear-out soon (when it widens with use or when *** it is left connected overnight ***). So the life of this toy is going to be very short. How manufacturer could have extended it? See recommendations for manufacturer below- There are "beams" (straws) and connectors in this toy. Since joints have four corners when you put these together one joint can connect/hold 4 straws meaning there should be more straws than joints. What you get is 390 straws and 315 joints. This ratio is not appropriate in my opinion. No matter what you build/construct, 100 or more joints are always left unused. So the ratio should have been 500 straws and 200 joints/connectors- Straws are not "flexible" enough to come back to real shape after bent 90 degrees (not as bad as straws you buy at Walmart but these should have been better since this is a toy and regular straws are not). I can understand making straws flexible would have reduced the sturdiness so it is catch 22Recommendations for the parents and manufacturer:- Parents: I wont recommend leaving a structure "connected" overnight or through some extended period of time because joints might lose strength (less elasticity - as diameter of the cylinder will increase having stayed over connector for long period of time)- Manufacturer: Please be practical. Add some "curved" straws so that kids don't keep twisting and turning straight straws to form curves, and please please extend life of this toy by extending joints from 1/4" to 1/2 inchesOver-all it seems expensive as it is not going to last long you can tell it out of the box; 3 stars for the fun while it lasts! 3Fun yet to much workThe straws all come in one size, but the instructions mention cutting the straws down to whatever size you want. Then the connectors need to be separated from their frame. The edges are sharp when you do the separating for use. I took a knife and cut the sharp edges off of one color of connectors, but I have not had the time to sit and cut sharps pieces from the remaining connectors. This product would be rated higher if there was less work to be done before being completely usable. My children have made some nice creations out of the straws and connectors. It is a nice concept...just a pain in the rear to prep for initial use. 3"Now Stronger" straws are harder to useWe had one set of these at work, and wanted to buy another set to make our collection larger. (I'm a youth services librarian, and we do quite a lot of programs that include STEM related play.) While the connectors seem to be the same as our older set, the straws are a little different. The package says 'Now with stronger straws.' While the straws may indeed be stronger and sturdier, some of them have smaller openings. It is VERY challenging to get some of the straws onto the connectors. Once you force the straws on to a connector for the first time, they stretch a bit, and it is easier after that. We'll have one of our teen volunteers help get them ready by making sure they straw is able to easily go onto the connectors. Kids LOVE working with this toy, and if the straws weren't so hard to get onto the connectors, I'd give this 5 stars. 3
