Customer Reviews

STINKS ON ICE!This toy received is NOT AS PICTURED and consist of a few pieces of flimsy thin plastic and a plastic soda bottle.A#1 FIRST CLASS UN-SURPASSABLE JUNK.Don't waste you time or $$$.Returned for full refund. 1Safe & educational, but it has cheap parts and requires a lot of assemblyI got this for my step-son for Christmas so that he and his dad could have some bonding time. He was super excited until he opened the box and there was a lot of assembly required.Note: IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE!The pieces are fairly cheap, which makes sense why the price is so low. Luckily the nose cone is styrafoam and very durable, since it lands on it.While it takes about an hour to assemble, it is a lot of fun to launch. I thought this would be a great science experiment for my step-son to learn from, which he did. He now knows of the reaction of baking soda and vinegar and how it makes the rocket go up (he's only 6). I like that it is so safe too.You will need to add a lot more tape/adhesive to keep the fuselage together after multiple blasts.Overall, for the price it's a good product. However if you are looking for something more flashy I would choose something else. If you are looking for safe and don't mind taping up the rocket more that the directions specify- then this is a good buy.A good starter rocket. 3Waste of time and money - nothing like the box saysThis was the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen from a kid's toy. When you open the box, the cheap, plastic parts look nothing like what's on the box, and you are expected to cut and assemble EVERYTHING. You get squares of balsa wood that YOU need to cut into fins with an exacto or utility knife. You get sheets of crappy sticker paper that YOU have to cut and stick on. (And they barely stick.) And you are given cheap pieces of plastic with double stick tape on them to hold it all together. The other reviewer was right -- the best part of this is the box.It took more than an hour just to put it together, and I am a builder! When we tried to launch it, the first time it popped before we could set it on the ground, and the second time it went a whopping 2 feet. This is a total waste of time and money. No idea where the product photo came from, but it looks NOTHING like the actual product. Please -- save your money. You'll have more fun with Mentos and Coke. (Which actually works and is pretty fun.) 1Scientific explorer's star rocket kitProduct didn't work as stated. Was nothing but a big mess to operate an when the time came to set it off it did not work. 2toyDo explain why you liked or disliked this product.Do compare to similar products and share how long you've used this product.Do identify specific attributes (e.g. comfort & fit of a shirt or the battery life of a camera) and whether they met your 5more hype than heightThe Star Rocket is a baking-soda/vinegar powered rocket kit of the Elmer Company. The kit comes in an attractive, sturdy, well designed cardboard box. Believe me, this is the best part of the kit. You will not be able to build the cool looking orange rocket shown in the artwork (inset picture shows rocket that cannot possibly have come from the included materials - cost cutting perhaps?). Build takes a couple of hours max. The rocket is mostly adhesive tape holding together poorly molded, low quality, thin plastic parts cradling a 1-L soda bottle (the heart of the rocket) and a white styrofoam nose. Thin balsa fins with adhesive overwrap last a couple of flights, and fall off promptly at launch, landing, or prior to launch (causing the rocket to either shoot at you, which could be unsafe, or away from you, leaving you covered in vinegar). Better tape the fins in place. The biggest problem, however, is the plug designed to hold pressure and allow the baking-soda/vinegar to react (before being blown out of the rocket). The plug is a test-tube style rubber stopper with a screw, and designed to fit in the 1L rocket opening and expand once in place - via said screw. The stopper shipped with the kit was too big, and unable to be tightened enough (by an adult) to generate any decent pressure (due to the slope on the stopper and its size). Fortunately, the plug is so poorly designed that it won't generate enough pressure for the low quality fins/attachment to actually hurt anyone. Launch prep is clumsy: balance rocket carefully wthotu spilling the vinegar; insert the baking soda tube and carefully tighten without sloshing any vinegar into the baking soda. Shake and run. Maximum height on several attempts: 30 feet (not quite the "up to 300 feet" advertised). Once used, the baking soda container must be thoroughly dried to have any chance of getting the next load of baking soda to dump out, and the plug and container must be dried to have any hope of holding pressure. Cost of propellants is about $0.25/shot.Overall, an expensive, poorly executed kit with low quality components.Recommendation? Build your own. You'll learn a lot more, more cheaply, and avoid major disappointment in the process. And it might actually work. Another great option are small solid propellant model rockets, like those by Estes - you can pick one up for less than the price of this kit. 1CRASH AND BURNWAS UNABLE TO DO THE ASSEMBLY IN THE TIME I HAD.WANTED TO USE IT ON SUNDAY GOT IT ON FRIDAY ANDHAD LITTLE TIME TO DO THE JOB. USED IT AS A MESSAGEILLUSTRATION FOR CHURCH. GOT A FEW LAUGHS. BUT NOT$30 WORTH. 2Not out of the BoxThis is NOT a bad rocket but you will need some time in advance to build it. If you are expecting an out of the box rocket this is not for you. Also, adult supervision is needed when using this model. 2this toy is a 'blast'The kids love this rocket because it was easy to put together, doesn't take long to set up when launching, and it goes really high. When it drops, some pieces can come off, but they are easily repaired. All in all, a great toy. 4Dissapointing junkBought this Rocket for my sons 4th Birtday and was dissapointed to see that it is nothing like the picture on the box. Took me the better half of the morning to try and assemble. Then once I had it to where none of the parts would fall off when you touched it, we proceeded to try and launch it. What a joke! It went about 20 ft up then came down and exploded on impact! I dis-assembled it and built a better one with some of the parts and came up with one that can actually launch and land without disingrating. Can't believe this company is ripping people off with this thing. Shame on you! 1
