Customer Reviews

Played with 3/4 heroes, 1/8 villains. My fiance and I have now played with the Argent Adept and Nightmist (Infernal Relics), Expatriette (Rook City), and we played against Plague Rat (Rook City). We heard pretty bad things about Rook City from friends who were also SotM players, and were pleasantly surprised--Expatriette is now among our top favorite heroes, and Plague Rat provided a much better challenge than we had expected. Playing against the Rat with Expatriette, Legacy, Nightmist, and the Argent Adept, he managed to knock out Legacy, and do significant damage to Nightmist and Expatriette before we killed him. Also in that game: Expatriette and a lucky Argent Adept are a potent combo. AA finished off that game with a lucky string of three "Arcane Cadences", which allowed him to draw a total of 16 cards, play 4, and then a few instruments and song parts that let him gain 2hp, and make someone else use a power and play a card, *twice*, each turn. With Expatriette this meant she could throw out ammo, fire, throw out more, fire again, and then during her turn, quick reload allowed her to pull this ammo out of her trash and use it again next time. In the last round we had Expatriette deal ~30 damage to win the game. We've had Argent Adept get unlucky and be much less useful in a game against Baron Blade, so he does depend on your first few draws being useful ones, but he's definitely better balanced than, say, Chrono Ranger. On her own, Expatriette plays a lot like Wraith, but as a heavy hitter instead of Wraith's balanced approach. The more equipment Expatriette has, the more damage she can do, but she's not going to get any team helpers like Wraith's Smoke bombs. I believe she's rated a "2" complexity, but I'd say she's not much more difficult to play than Wraith is (1).Meanwhile, we have not figured out how to play Nightmist well yet. It's possible we just didn't get lucky, but she simply did not do very much in our one game with her. My fiance says she looks like a deck that should be a lot of fun once we figure her out though, so we will likely try again.Storywise, Rook City is a bit boring, but Infernal Relics is awesome. I'm glad they were combined into this box because if I had to choose I might have missed out on the good gameplay in RC though. 4Great expansion with ramped up difficultySo much fun. We have been playing the main game for about 6 months now, but had found tactics to beat all of the bosses pretty much every time. The bosses in this box are much more difficult (and numerous), leading to a lot more strategy building. We will definitely have a lot of fun with this box, and will probably get the next expansion (whichever that is). 5Love this gameWe bought this expansion because we love Sentinels of the Multiverse. We haven't played through all the characters yet but we're getting there! We can't wait to be able to order the next expansion. 5Great expansion set; NOT a stand-alone gameGreat expansion set! Includes 4 new heroes, 8 new villains, and 4 new locations - adding a ton of new variations and replay value to the game. As with the original set, the artwork and flavor text on the cards are very well done; they don't change the game, but add to the comic-book feel of playing, which will warm the hearts of long-time superhero fans like me. New characters are provided with good bios and an interesting range of abilities in their decks. A few new game mechanics are introduced (multiple enemies with the Ennead and Chairman/Operative; spell points for the hero Nightmist), but they're fairly easy to grasp and won't slow down gameplay significantly.Note that this is an expansion, NOT a stand-alone game set. It might be possible to figure out the game with only the materials provided, but it would definitely be easier to buy and learn the original game first. 5Great expansion, but feels like it should be in core setMy gf and I LOVE Rook City and Sentinels of the Multiverse in general. This expansion ups the difficulty and widens your options, but I would say the core set honestly doesn't feel core until you include the heroes, villains, and environments from this set (there's a reason the core set actually includes spacers for this one). Honestly, they should merge the two sets into a new starter pack, as the base game plus this expansion feel like a much more solid package than the initial base box.Still, worth the price of entry. One thing to note: My gf and I have found that while the game is theoretically balanced enough for two heroes, it feels a lot better with three. If there's only two of you, try having one person play two heroes and see if that feels any different. 5So many new villains!! And 4 new Environments and Heroes. This is the expansion for the game Sentinels of the Multiverse. I really like that the expansion adds 8 new villains. I am excited to try them all out. So far we have tried out The Matriarch. You defiantly need to have at least one hero who can hit multiple targets all at once (Tachyon worked really well). We also played against The Ennead turned out easier than it looked, but perhaps we just had the right hero combination (used all the new heroes in this expansion with the environment Tomb of Anubis). I look forward to seeing if we will be able to defeat The Chairman, who looks tough. The new hero Expatriate is fun to play. She has guns you equip and ammo cards that fire. She can do quite a bit of damage. The Tomb of Anubis turned out a little friendlier then some of the other environments we have played before. If you are looking to expand the multiverse, this is a great expansion to get. 5One of my favorite games!I was pretty nervous about buying this game because I have a gaming friend who is very picky about games, and we both really like Pandemic and Dead of Winter, which are pretty difficult to improve upon. But I wanted to add some variety into the mix, so I took a shot, and boy am I glad! We played this for more or less 4 days straight and had a great time doing it. The simple game setup but deep game strategy is excellent, and we liked the replayability you get from having all the different deck combinations. Good difficulty level for us, and we enjoyed the cooperative nature of the game. Recommended! 5Great expansion for one of my favorite gamesIf you like Sentinels of the Multiverse, I think this is an essential pickup. Rook City is simply INSANE - easily the most difficult environment I've played. The added heroes and villains all seem to be very well balanced for the game. Obviously, some of the villains are harder to defeat, and some of the heroes take a few tries to figure out. This game is anything but throw a punch, take a punch. There are some straightforward heroes like that, but with most of them, you have to figure out how they work, and then how they mesh with each other to really get a flow going. The box is high quality, very sturdy like the original, although you'll have to buy a couple of expansions before you need to keep cards in more than one box. If you do buy multiple expansions, however, you'll be thankful for the box this one comes in.I highly recommend this expansion. 5Good expansion, good valueGood value. Adds a good amount of stuff for only $28 (at the moment) and it's much cheaper than buying both expansions separately. The next one you'll shop for after this is the Shattered & Wrath double-expansion, similar to this one but $4 (atm). So definitely start with this one, maybe Shattered & Wrath will decrease in price over time. 5Where were these games when I was a kid?I'm a thirty-something, and am amazed at the plethora of co-op tabletop games there are these days. I wish that these games were available back when me and my friends had plenty of disposable free time, but I digress. I would place Sentinels in my top three of at this time (only superseded by Arkham Horror and Axis of Villains). This expansion does exactly what an expansion should do. It doesn't mess too much with the mechanics, and adds new characters, environments and villains. If you enjoyed the original game, there's no reason not to get this expansion. 4
