Description

So you're not a big fan of chess games that seem to stretch on for hours on end ... Or perhaps you're new to the idea of playing board games by touch? well, it sounds as if our completely tactile version of checkers is for you! Just like our chess sets, every detail of this adapted version of checkers is tactual, allowing blind and sighted players to enjoy it together. The wooden checkerboard itself measures almost 9" by 13" - plenty of space to lay out a game of checkers. On the board, the white squares are raised above the black ones, and the squares even have holes in the center so the pieces won't fall over. As for the plastic checkers, the white pieces have a large dot on the top, and, of course, the kings are twice as large as the pawns. And again, you don't have to know Braille to play this game!

Customer Reviews

it is a good productthe picture says everything, of the product. 5GiftBrought f or a gift 5Five StarsLove when I can find Braille items for my niece 5Not able to play the gameThe pegs didn't fit the holes 1Missing holesMissing holes on the black squares can't play 1hours of enjoyment aheadI'm impressed. I've played on another board that did not have raised squares to aid with navigation. This looks to be real wood, holes drilled for each game piece. These holes are centered in each square, and there are holes spaced in the trays at each end of the board for captured checkers that are out of the game. This makes game play so much easier--no chasing pieces while they slide around the board or across the table...or end up on the floor. As stated in other reviews, half the pieces (the white ones according to what others have said), have raised dots on top for easy contract. The black pieces are left smooth.I played with a friend for some two hours earlier. Now that was a good game. My hat is off to whoever came up with this ingenious design. 5New Way to Play an Old FavoriteI recently lost my vision and really missed playing my favorite classic board games. I found this checkers version and was delighted. The style takes a little time to learn, but it works quite well. I have played with people who are sighted and I usually manage to win. Each checker has a peg underneath that fits into a whole in the appropriate square on the board. This allows the blind player to feel around the board without the pieces sliding. The white pieces all have pegs on the top to help distignuish from the black pieces. Each side has four kings, which are noticeably larger than the pawns. Highly recommended! 5Three problems cost two starsI bought this checker set as a gift for my father's 91st birthday. He is blind, hearing impaired and suffers from Parkinson's disease so it is difficult to find things to keep his mind engaged and Parkinson's/sensory deprivation hallucinations at bay. I have purchased many things for him over the years, most of which turned out to be a waste of money for one reason or another. So the fact that this is actually properly designed and functional is a huge plus for me and I wanted to give it five stars. Unfortunately there are a few problems that I find serious enough to only call this "OK".First, what this is: A 9 inch by 14 inch piece of peg board that has the pictured rectangular, wood, three section frame attached to the top. Squares of wood that are stained black were then attached in the center grid to create the checker board pattern. The "checkers" are hard plastic with the white pieces having a little point on top to differentiate the color by touch. All pieces have a bottom peg that fits nicely into the pegboard holes. Since these can't be stacked together there are also four "Kings" of each color. Having the two smaller sections at each end of the board makes it possible for a blind person to store captured pieces and the kings easily. So far so good. But the problems:This was shipped in a sealed plastic bag in a padded mailer. This means you will need to find a box for gift giving or storage. A minor problem. But on opening the bag I was hit by the first serious problem- the smell. I would have said that the wood had been stained and immediately sealed in plastic but that's not quite it. I've noticed the same smell in products like craft supplies, beads, etc that have been shipped in plastic directly from China. Maybe it is a kind of plastic they use. I'm guessing that the seller imports these from China just based in the smell. The whole set was very dusty and I wiped the whole thing with Clorox wipes (as I do everything going to my Dad). That helped some but even after sitting out on a table for several days there is still some smell on it. I think anyone very sensitive to smell will be bothered by it.My other problem is the plastic pieces. These are the hard stamped or extruded plastic that come out joined together and then are broken apart. Unfortunately, as is common in that process, it is not a perfect cut and some pieces are left with little sharp edges. Giving a blind person a game piece with a sharp piece of plastic on it, is not a good idea. Particularly an elderly person with very thin skin. So went through all of the pieces and "sanded" them with an emery board. Tedious but it worked.So... since I don't think Dad has a very good sense of smell, I will find an appropriate box and give this to him. The game is well designed so whether or not he enjoys it will be up to him. If he doesn't it won't be a reflection on the product. But if, like me, you are giving this as a gift order early so you will have time to clean it up and air it out. 3Perfect for children but not for an adultMy father has macula degeneration and I thought the game would be much larger. His fingers were too big for this small game! Perfect for children but not for an adult. 1Five StarsPurchased for my blind son, we play for hours. He loves it! 5
