Customer Reviews

An excellent model of the USS England.A most excellent model of a historic Destroyer Escort. I have a particular interest in DEs, as I served on a more recent FF, that was classed a DE when first commisioned. A lot of difference in my old ship and the Buckley class, but close enough! DEs aren't as longlegged as Destroyers, nor as heavily armed, but they did their duty and the some. This kit is far better detailed than Lindberg's slightly larger USS DeLong kit, and took considerably longer to build. I did muchbofvthe deck and horizontal surface painting before assembling it, building it in separate subassemblies. Left the guns and some other bits for last. There are a few extra parts leftover, like a small boat and davits. They will go on the DeLong kit to spruce it up. I painted the assembled lower hull red before joining to the upper hull. The PE framework could be omitted from the DC racks without a problem, but the hedgehog launcher PE piece is easy to install - use CA glue for the brass parts! With so many tiny parts, a clipper and a pointed modeling tweezers are necessities.Testors Model Master makes the correct Navy Blue and Weather Deck Blue enamel paint for this model, also available via Amazon.A few ships of this class were upgunned later in the war, so I will get a second kit, use some spare 5" and Quad Forties from two Fletcher class kits to modify it. I am slowly building a decent 1/350 scale WWII fleet. 5I have numbers sheet.Bought 5 got my fleet 5Just what I needed. a DE. this one ...Just what I needed. a DE. this one will be converted into a DER, Destroyer Escort Radar. ie, DER 386 5Trumpeter 1/350 Scale USS England -- A Great KitThis destroyer escort warship achieved modest fame in May 1944 when, in company with three other vessels of the same class, she took part in an action in which six Japanese submarines were destroyed. Trumpeter now provides us with a kit in which the weapons employed hedgehogs and depth charges are intricately and convincingly detailed. The model has 200 plastic parts on four sprues, one sheet of photoetched pieces, a decal sheet and a stand. It can be assembled as a waterline version, but the kit includes a shapely red lower hull allowing for the construction of a full-hulled model.I found this an extremely satisfying model to build. While some of the pieces are tiny, i.e., ranging down to 3mm, patience and some planning got them into place even with my unsteady old hands. The 10-page instruction booklet has very clear drawings that could hardly be improved, and a separate, color sheet depicts the paint scheme. The fit of all the pieces is admirably precise. Perfectionists will want to clean up the inevitable tiny bits of flash here and there, but no major trimming is required anywhere. The PE parts are uncomplicated and are for enhancing the depth charges; the instructions are quite clear and the metal is easy to bend. The finished model is 10.5 inches long.Another feature to recommend this kit is its modest cost, compared to other Trumpeter kits in the same scale. All in all, there is very little to criticize with this model kit. It was a pleasure to build, and I m already thinking of laying in another one so I can do it again at some point in the future 5Looks like a nice 1:350 kit!A charming 1:350 kit. Not too big, not too small. Comes with a cute stand. If you buy some 200 and 1000 grit sanding sponge, you can easily make the two hull parts flush in no time, just don't do this sanding inside where you risk breathing in, or have the sanding dust contaminate your living room. Do it outside in fresh air.Apparently I got some weird kit, with the deck piece being 1.5mm too short. Looking at photos by a reviewer, he don't seem to have this issue. Weird. This was easily fixed by using a sharp blade to cut the deck piece in two ca 4.25cm from the rear side (stern), adding two strips of 1x1mm styrene for adding the additional 1.5mm of deck.Looking forward to finish building this kit! :) I like spending some time with the basic work of working the hull pieces together, so I don't rush that stage of the build. I like using Vallejo putty (white marble powder) together with a coarse! sanding stick, or it takes forever to grind that stuff away.Although this kit comes with a little bit of photo etch, for the radar and presumably depth charge dispensers, I bought Tom's photo etch for this kit separately.I plan to carefully cut off most of the tiny parts on the deck/hull pieces with a tiny photo etch saw (gluing the parts back on later), to try create a perfectly smooth desk surface, flush with the hull piece. That way I can sand the hull properly without worrying about damaging the details. :) 4
