    I would give it a 4.5The mat is somewhat flimsy but the pieces are sturdy and should last a long time. It did have a weird smell to it when I opened it though. 5nice set, some issuesI bought this chess set along with the Chess for Children Kindle book to teach my 5 1/2 year old son how to play.I like the size and the overall quality of pieces in this set. My only gripe with pieces is that weights rattle in a few of the pieces.The board is a good size and fits well on our coffee table, but it is the board that caused me a bit of a disappintment. First, it is not black and white a the picture on the product page shows, but rather the squares are black and gray, which makes the board look "dusty". Second, once unrolled, it maintains curls and creases from storage. I wonder if it was made of a different material, it would lay straight.I knew the set did not have a storage bag, and I was planning to use the product box for storage, but the box was sealed with a lot of taped which was not applied accuarately, so I'll need to find something else to store the set in. The black and white chess pieces came packed in two small plastic ziploc bags, and both of them were ripped. I transferred pieces into a bigger and thicker ziplog bag and it's been holding up pretty well so far.Overall, I believe that positives outweigh the negatives, so I like this set. 4Good starter set, but may not hold up well after some timeI usually play chess online since there is no one else in the household that plays chess, however I bought this set to be able to introduce chess to my son who will be turning four soon.Vinyl sets, compared to traditional wooden ones, take up less space and cost less. It looked as it is the right starter set for a kid to play with and jump on it.I liked the size of the board and pieces. They are designed for adult hands but also food for kids to distinguish the differences between the pieces too. The board, despite being extremely thin, stays flat and pieces stand OK even on a carpeted floor. One thing I did not like was that the dark squares are black and that is not ideal in my opinion. I would rather go for green or something else that would not interfere with the color of black pieces. However, I am not blaming them for this since it was my fault not to check the description properly.The pieces are smooth, well rounded and come with some sort of non slip textile base. The non slip base definitely works for the moment but feels like it is loosely attached and may be not having a good support underneath. So I would not be surprised if it wears or gets torn soon (in that case I will knock another star from my rating).The main criticism is about the heavy VOC smell coming out of the board (it surely needs de-gassing for a day or so to release all that nasty chemical smell.) Additionally, after ordering this product, I realized that there are sets within this price range (may be a few bucks more) that come with storage bags and that is a big missing for this set. They send the pieces in regular ziploc bags which is neither practical, nor stylish.With some more research, I could have ended up buying a different set that would suit better for my needs and may be offer a better value for the money. But, as of now, I can not complain much with this set either. My son and I will test it for a couple of months and may be then I can update this review.PS: If the manufacturer's of this product are reading this review, I have a small note about the short text you guys wrote on the box on the history of chess: It says chess was played by Egyptian kings but in reality chess was invented over 500 years after the last Egyptian kingdom was gone... 4ISO: "Training Wheels" &... ***FOUND 'EM!!***A new friend noticed my "Pretty" chess set and mentioned that although she knew how the pieces moved she didn't "Really know how to play" but always had wanted to learn. After a few minutes of "Chess Talk" had gone by I found myself "Signed up" as a Chess Tutor. This I am taking as a serious responsibility - To Teach and TO TEACH WELL.I needed some tools.This Scholastic/Tournament Board along with the pieces & men -- Just fills the bill --EXACTLY.We are very much in the, "Wax 'ON' / wax 'OFF'" stage. We started with all the Hoops, Loops, & Protocols of Tournament Play -- Just so she would know what's out there. Now, were "On the Board" and "In discussion" over "stuff."AND [MOST Important] We are BOTH having FUN with it.The "Official" Board makes My job easier and SHE finds the reference marking to be of essential use. She HAS the determination and she is quite bright. She said the hardest thing for her in working with me is to remind herself that she doesn't "have to 'Dumb down'".THAT goes on my list of "Greatest Hits" complements. 5They are hard on things but these have held up great for the past few monthsWe have two young boys ages 5 and 6 who play in a household with 2 other siblings, all under the age of 5. They use this board once a week at least, and used it everyday for the first few weeks we had it. They are hard on things but these have held up great for the past few months. They are weighted enough that they have some heft and sit nicely on the board. The board is good-sized and lays out on the table nicely. The pieces have been dropped onto our hard concrete/vinyl floors and have hardly a mark. Not sure how some reviewers are having pieces break. You'd have to be deliberately destructive to break the pieces we received. Great set. We would buy again in a heartbeat. 5Five StarsGreat price. Exactly as pictured. Fast & secure shipping. 5Tournament Style works for our clubThe mat surface rolls well. I prefer to roll them up with the checked side out, so that they lay better on the table. There is always a strong plastic smell to the board and the piece, I spread them out in a vacant room for several days, until it subsides. They last a long time and the middle and high schoolers like the pieces and functionality of this set. The 20-inch board and pieces is what they like best for practice and to take to matches. 4A great bargainWe purchased this to place it tabletop for a birthday party. I needed something I could easily take it down and put it away quickly. These pieces are made of a very durable plastic. It comes with a board that is a mat that you unroll to use. It is at a very good price point. And is the best value I could find. The pieces has a little weight to them to keep them from falling over if the table is shaken.You have to consider the price point that they are in. Than judge the product. This board is regulated for US Chess Federation tournaments. If you are looking for an expensive board than by all means purchase one. But if you are looking at this price point for a nice board tha can be used in tournament play, you don't have a lot to spend on it, than this is your board. Just take care of it like you do costume jewelry or a fake Rolex and you want be disappointed. 5Smelly!!Those folks that said this set smells were right! Whoo. We had to put the whole thing in another room to gas off and close the door. It's still a bit smelly, but tolerable in a large room.One pawn's velvety footpad was partially off to the side and cut funny, but other than that, everything is perfect. 4Awesome purchase for the priceThis is a great chess set for it's price. This is what many standard tournament facilities use. The mat (board) itself has a nice finish (I did notice upon closer inspection that there are a few very fine indentures if you can call them that on my mat but nothing too majour to affect my view on this set), it's fairly durable and it's got some good spaced out large squares. The chess pieces themselves are also sturdy and well made. I used it on a flat table to play and I also used it on my bed.. Playing chess before going to sleep is good for the brain.....LOLI bought this item and within a week and a half it reached me. I do live in the Caribbean so I use a skybox to get my products from North America. I did have to pay the skybox fee to come in (skybox users take note the box is fairly big but lightweight). I paid an average of $15.00 US dollars in shipping and tax for my skybox to bring this down from Florida to the Caribbean.The set comes in a rectangular brown box. They could have packaged it into a smaller box but that would mean they would have to roll up the mat (chess board). It came folded in half with the chess pieces. Some people online here say that the pieces don't come in bags. My pieces came in clear, plastic baggies that seal. The bags are cheaply made but there's no problem there as I dind't expect this set to come with any bags. The bag in which the white pieces were held had a tear in it. You can always buy your own ziplock bags to put the pieces in for safe keeping.One extra queen does come with each side (Black and White). The pieces do have a good size to them so there shouldn't be much worry in case you set this set up in a home with very small kids. (ALTHOUGH IT"S ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP SUCH ITEMS OUT OF REACH FOR EXTRA PRECAUTION!)Overall I am pleased with my purchase. 5
