Customer Reviews

Very fun game, medium quality build, poor paint workThe Royal Game of Ur is a very fun, two player game. I should note that I have not tried playing by the rules included in the box, which are a somewhat strategic, move-in-any-direction, to fill four of the same symbols game. I have used the rules found on Wikipedia, and detailed in the British Museum's YouTube videos. The build of this particular set is of medium quality. While everything is sturdy, the wood used is of low quality, worrying me that it will not remain sturdy. This is something that surprised me after spending 48 dollars on the game. The paint work, however is of very poor quality. The moving pieces are painted variably. Some pieces have very clear, distinct dots painted, others are not very clearly painted, or the paint has worn off in shipment. The white paint used on two of the tips of the black dice is unevenly applied, and already wearing off after fewer than 10 games played. This makes it difficult to tell what score you or your opponent has rolled from certain angles (like across the table) 3Authentic Ancient GameI am very pleased at how accurately the game replicates actual ancient game boards found in Mesopotamia, and the pyramid "dice" and wooden playing pieces also add to the playing experience.Although I do agree with the other reviewer: the instructions included with this game are impossible to understand. Fortunately, I knew The British Museum website [...] had a virtual version of this game and we were able to review the rules prior to playing the game. For anyone needing to know how to play the Game of Ur go to and click on "challenge." I'm not sure why the manufacturers don't use the same playing rules as The British Museum. 5Everyone had a blast - competitive and the 7 year old had just as much fun!Play the rules by Irving Finkle - this game, being so old and played for thousands of years has had some rule "revisions" through the long years. Finkle's instructions (watch his youtube video) are great. Had the in-laws and grandkids up for Turkey Day weekend and everyone loved the play - easy to learn, even the 7 year old loved it and really got into the strategy of game play and knocking your adversary off the board. Everyone played multiple times ... competitive and vengeful... but always fun and with a good heart. In the end, my granddaughter begged to take it with her to share and now I have to buy another board. Worth it! 5Best game in 5000 yearsMy wife and I love this game. It is two players which is rare. I love the history behind the game and bore my wife to tears with references to the history. There are some comments against the wood slats on the top. I disagree, I like how the wood slats hold everything in place. The board is really light, so not having the slots would be a nightmare if you have dogs, kids, are playing at a picnic, etc... I highly recommend the game, and recommend watching videos about the game on YouTube. 5Well made, and very interesting!I like that this is available in this handle-able form, and I like the drawer for pieces. Two things that would make it perfect would be some kind of latch or mechanism to keep the drawer closed (even just a magnetic strip on the back of the drawer would help) and alternate instructions for play. The included instructions represent different game play that what is found elsewhere such as historical sites about the game. I like having the option, but including both in the instructions would be great! 4Attractive, reasonably priced setA fine set that looks good and is priced reasonably from a good manufacturer that provides excellent customer service. The seller shipped promptly as well. The game itself is archaeologically believed to be in the backgammon line, although the rather meager instructions that came with the game were for a more abstract game of jumping pieces, etc. Having two rules sets--one for the backgammon-type game, one of the abstract game would have been ideal. Otherwise, no complaints whatsoever. 5Nice try, but inexact replica.I liked the general appearance and faithfulness to the historical game but the use of wooden slats on the top surface was not authentic and not skillfully done with some slats glued in crooked. The top surface of the board was supposed to be flat to facilitate flicking game pieces off the board when captured. I would have preferred to purchase a similar quality product were it available with a flat surface. Also the instructions included with the product had only one version of the game which was much less enjoyable than the one played on YouTube by Dr. Irving Finkel of the British Museum. 3Great historical family fun!On the pricey side for the build quality, but it holds up well to the rigors of family game night. There is some strategy involved but it is impossible to truly blow out an opponent, which makes it fun for all ages and skill levels. I can see why it was so popular for thousands of years. As other have noted, I strongly recommend discarding the game rules that come in the box (at least at first). There are lots of different versions of playing the game. By far the most enjoyable and easiest to learn is the version demonstrated on the British Museum's youtube video. The curator's personality alone will make you want to play this game. 5History brought to life. What a great recreation of the most ancient of games. Good quality and looks amazing. I love this game. Great price. Super fun and educational. A history lesson and game all in one. 5Great Game. This is a nice game for the price. I don't like the edging, it prohibits flicking the pieces off the board. Use the Brittish museum Irving Finkel rules. The provided rules don"t make sense. 4
