Customer Reviews

I am pleased with the quality of the cards and think this ...I am a new Mahjong player and want to learn the tile combinations. I was advised to work with a set of tiles to do that. Found these cards and thought this would be a cheaper alternative rather than buy a full set. I am pleased with the quality of the cards and think this will work for me until I am ready to buy a full Mahjong set. 5Great Practice!!I purchased these cards to make it easier to practice mah jongg. They are great!!! No more setting up walls (which took too much practice time). The book "Mah Jongg Made Easy" tells you what you need to know about playing the game with "kards". The only thing that was a little trying was how slippery the cards are. But, a lot of practice will take care of that. I highly recommend this product. 178 kards and jokers are included. 5Too Many DrawbacksThese cards can be a good substitute for a mah jongg game, but come with some drawbacks.1. It's hard to hold 13 cards in your hand and clearly see each one.2. Since cards must be constantly rearranged, it's difficult to keep them in place.3. Once cards are discarded (like their tile counterparts), it's very difficult to see them on the table (a must for playing).4. The cards come with no instructions at all. Unless you already play mah jongg, this will not be easy to learn and play.I bought them because I thought this would be a convenient way to play mah jongg on a cruise. The concept is great, but the drawbacks make it not worth the effort. 2A great secondary optionI still prefer playing with real mah jongg tiles. However, lugging a full set around while on vacation often just isn't practical - especially if you're flying and have a weight limit. These "kards" were great to be able play our favorite game on the go. There are no instructions included in this box, so we just played it just like we would regular tiles. The only difference is that you can't see the tiles already played, but that wasn't a big deal. I highly recommend travelers buy a set. If you have trouble seeing regular tiles, these kards have much bigger print. If you are going to be playing a lot, you might want to consider getting wooden card holders as one lady in our group has arthritis and said holding 13 cards for extended periods of time bothered her hand. 4Very happy with this lightweight, compact travel MJ setVery pleasantly surprised with this set of mahjong cards. They'll be great for traveling, and are exceptionally easy for me to shuffle, despite arthritic hands. I also purchased an arc-shaped set of lightweight card holders that will complete this compact travel set. This deck includes all of the extra cards, and some blank cards in case some get lost. The set would work for other versions of MJ because of all the extra cards. 5Better than I expectedThe cards just arrived today and I have yet to get 4 people together to learn to play. (I got the less expensive cards just to see if I'd even like playing.) I was very pleased to find:1) All the cards were in the box. (I saw one person had a complaint that a card was missing.)2) They were all solid plastic (I prefer them as they tend to stay nice much longer than paper)3) There were two complete sets of both red and green dragons. One set used the Chinese symbols seen on classic sets and the other had drawings of dragons. There were THREE sets of white dragon cards: Box symbol found on some sets, totally blank cards and then a drawing of a dragon to match the red and green. Having choices like that is a nice touch.4) As advertised, there are 8 jokers for American style play. The only problem I had was there was a tool mark along the edge of one end of about 1/3 of the cards but I think that will go un-noticed after the deck gets used.I suspect the cards might not be to the liking of people who love the physical dynamics of the tiles. The "wall building" and other activities in the traditional game will be reduced to simply drawing from a draw deck, but that won't bother me any. I expect to get some good fun out of this inexpensive deck.Followup 3 years after initial review:I'm happy to see my review got unanimous positive responses. Since my initial review I bought a real Mah Jongg tile set and have made some friends with actual Chinese players. Lucky me! IMHO the sellers of this card set provide a quality product as well as a good introductory product. 5Mahjong On The Cheap, A Great IntroductionSomehow my wife and I got interested in mahjong, but had never played the real thing. We wanted a game that predominantly would be played just by the two of us. Well everyone knows that you need four players to play mahjong. But why? I read the different rules on line, and other than the Japanese version which can handle three, you must have four players. But why? So we decided to try it. So I looked on Amazon for mahjong sets. Whoa! Here is the one we wanted American Mahjong Game Set with Red Wood Case but $85? That's a lot of cash to find out, yeah you do need four players. So we looked at the cheaper traveler's set, but what if we do like the game and can play it with two, then we got $20 tied up in a possibly junky set. Then I spotted the cards. Seven bucks and you are playing mahjong. It is just as mahjongy (game wise) as the tile sets but without the expense. Yes you don't have the romance of the clatter of the sparrows, but to find out if you like the game, you can't beat the cards. Also there is something to be said for portability--the cards are about the equivalent of three sets of playing cards verses a 15 pound set of tiles in an elegant wood box. So if you want to play mahjong on vacation, take the cards. The cards are good quality and attractive and I would think just as durable as any deck of playing cards. There are additional flowers and jokers so the cards can be used for either traditional Chinese or American play. Of course there are no instructions so you will need a book and a National Mahjong League Card if you want to play the current 2011 American version. If you do want to learn the American style, the Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win has a 2004 NMJL score card that will teach the game. There are a number of websites that offer rules and scoring for traditional Hong Kong style, so if you have access to the Internet, you can be playing traditional Hong Kong style mahjong for seven bucks. We had the cards for two days and we were convinced, yes we can play mahjong with two players. We then bought the set above, which is a very lovely set. So for us the cards were an inexpensive introduction to a game for which we have come to enjoy very much, and we love our mahjong set. But without the cards, we may have decided that a mahjong set was too expensive and missed out on a game that we really enjoy. We are still wondering why you must have four players! 5Great for travel! These cards are great for traveling and of good quality. Much easier to take on trips and my friend and I were able to pass the time away while on a long flight. I bought two plastic travel carriers for bar soaps and these came in handy on the plane for a place to keep discarded cards in one place and for packing the cards for travel. They gave us the opportunity to play Mah Jongg in places where we couldn't play with tiles. 5The only big improvement I would suggest for less confusion make the craks have red numbers like the bams have green numbersThese cards cost $10.99 and included free shipping. They are portable, don't take up much play space and are inexpensive. The only big improvement I would suggest for less confusion make the craks have red numbers like the bams have green numbers .Considering the economical price, the portability and the smaller space required to play I'd buy another deck if I needed them. The set includes a lot of cards so use a card shuffler if you have one. 4Perfect for inexperienced Mah Jongg playersThe American Mah Jongg Playing Kards from Yellow Mountain Imports are great! The cards are the same quality and size as regular playing cards and shuffle easily. Once you receive the cards, you must remove the extra cards. The deck includes an option for the jokers, dragons and flowers/seasons so that you can play with the pictures that are most familiar to you. In addition, blank cards are included in case you need to replace a lost or damaged card.I'm so glad I ordered these cards. I've only played for about 6 months and realized that I really didn't know the reference card very well, and it was holding me back from playing with experienced players. I'm still playing with my learning group and I want to branch out and find other opportunities. I joined a game at a community center about 3 months ago, telling the other players at the table that I was a beginner. They were very patient and I tried hard to keep up with their pace of the game. However, I found that I was having trouble trying to determine what I had in my hand and match it to a possible hand on the reference card. They were a friendly and encouraging group, and I'd like to play with them again - after I feel that I can keep up with their pace of the game.I decided that I needed to hone my skills with the reference card. I went to my favorite place to find anything I could ever want (Amazon, of course) and found these cards. Once I received the cards, I made up rules for a Mah Jongg Solitaire card game and play at least once a day. I recommend this deck of cards for anyone trying to learn Mah Jongg.Even if I just deal out 13 cards and use the reference card to organize options for playing, I find it's a great tool to keep me familiar with the card and considering different options in between games with my learning group. Good luck and I hope you Mah Jongg often! 5
