Great set for startersPros :- Great for carrying around- Price is ok- Magnets work well- Board big enough to be able to play and small enough to fit in a bag- Bowls includedCons :- Bowls dont lock between the indentations- Board does NOT lock at all when closing it (so you have to put it in the package box to store it)- Few defective stone-magnet attachments (magnet sticking out on one side and therefore making the stones tilted)- Board not laying completely flat when laid down (makes a slight but noticable fold)Sumary : Great if its your first set. Its portable too. Few built defects but I do recomend it to anyone looking for a travel set or to get into the game in a reasonable budget. 3Cool travel size boardJust got it and excited to learn how to play. Bought it after watching a Netflix documentary about this game. Didn t realize how huge the game is in Asia.I thought the magnet would only be at the dots where the lines intercect but the entire board is magnetic. 5Perfectly sized board and stones, and dry-erasable!I am VERY happy with this, it's literally the perfect size! Nearly full-sized!I bought this set to play Go with my son on the road and at restaurants. We previously used the "other" magnetic set--the only other one available through Amazon--and that one gave us problems: the magnets were set crookedly in the stones, and the metal playing surface came loose. After regluing it and having it come loose again, I bought this set.The first thing I noticed when it came was that this set is big! The product info SAID it was 14.5"x15", but somehow I wasn't expecting it to be so big. The "other" board was 11x11", which is "only" about 4" smaller each way... That's mostly a good thing, but it makes space a little tight on a restaurant table along with a meal.The set itself is beautiful. The playing surface has a faux wood grain; it's very subtle and very pleasing. The edges are beveled and finished with a nice texture. It lies flat on the table and gives the overall appearance of a substantial, thick, quality board, despite being made of plastic. The stones are much higher quality than the "other" set: they're very uniform, sit flat on the board, and have a pleasing shape. They look almost like candy. The "other" set had many stones with magnets missing. This set had one or two like that, but very few.All around, this is a nice, big, pleasing board to play on the road. I heartily recommend it! Get this one, unless you really, really, really need the smaller size of the "other" one. They take it very seriously there it seems.Lastly a safety point... these are swallow hazards and choking hazards. i worry more about swallowing though as if you swallow 2+ they can magnetically stick to each other in your bowels and cause the tissue to erode and die off. A rare but serious cause of a surgical emergency. 5Be Conscious of Which Seller You Purchase FromThis is the second time I've bought "this" product (quotes intentional). The first time I purchased, Yellow Mountain Imports fulfilled my order. I received the product in a timely manner, and it was exactly as pictured here. The board is large for a travel board, making it great if you just want a decent board for home (or for work to play at lunch time) with magnetic pieces so they don't scatter easily. I'd only had it a week and only played with it a few times, but I decided I wanted a second (one for home, one for work).The second time I purchased, Asian Home Outlet fulfilled my order. I received a different board entirely. It is about two thirds the size of the one pictured here, and the stones are about the size of a thumbtack (the head, not the sharp part). This board is actually much more suited for traveling as it almost seems to snap shut instead of being loosely open like the larger one. In addition to its smaller size, the smaller board appears to stay shut fairly well, making it even more suited for travel than the larger counterpart which will slide open of its own accord.I was rather disappointed upon receiving this second one as I was looking for two large boards - one to leave at work for lunch time and one to leave at home. I gave this product a three star rating simply for the surprise in not knowing what I was getting this second time around. Nonetheless, the smaller board looks like it's great if you ARE looking for a travel board.In conclusion, if you want the larger board pictured here (and I can't guarantee that they won't send you something else) specifically choose your order to come from Yellow Mountain Imports. If you're looking for a smaller board more suited to travel, purchase from Asian Home Outlet. 3A perfect "starter" Go set... almost...The first thing I noticed about this set is how large it is. It's about the size of a standard backgammon "briefcase" set, roughly 15" (38cm) wide, with stones only slightly larger in diameter than a standard six-sided die. If you have especially large hands, as I do, you'll find this much more pleasant to play on than many "starter" Go sets, especially the ones designated as "travel sets."I would recommend this set easily to anyone who's interested in learning the game, but doesn't necessarily want to pay close to three figures for even the least expensive full-size board with stones. Yes, it's plastic all the way through, but the magnets in the board and in each stone actually give it a pleasant enough weight that it doesn't feel at all "cheap," like most sets in this price range do. Plus, the fact the board is a decent size, and the stones actually come in real (albeit plastic) bowls rather than tiny little zip-seal bags, raise this somewhat above the "deluxe" set by Hansen that's usually recommended to beginners (and is also in this price range). This may be a few dollars more expensive, but it's definitely worth it even if you won't necessarily use it as a travel set.Are there problems? Well, yes, of course. For one thing, you'll probably want to keep the box it came in; the board doesn't securely seal shut, but instead uses non-locking pegs to stay closed. Over time, these pegs can break off or wear down. Also, the bowls for the stones similarly lack a secure "stay in place" locking system, and can even fall open if handled roughly in the box. I would recommend getting some rubber bands to ensure the bowls stay closed when put away. Ironically, these drawbacks along with the relative size of the game itself (it's not exactly something you can easily throw in your book bag or purse) would appear to work against it as a "travel-size" set, but none of them is enough to qualify as a deal-breaker even when added together; it's more just something you should be aware of.On the other hand, if you're on the lookout for a Go set that won't kill your budget, won't require you to practically use tweezers to handle the stones, and yet still feels like an expensive set made from good materials, you could do far worse than to end your search here. It's also great for analysis and game reconstructions. 4Best review for this board.I give this product 4 and a half stars.First, the product concept is extraordinary for this price range. Upon opening the box and taking out the go board, I see the folded board and the quality seems very high for a $23 board. The inside of the board has upper and lower groves to keep the plastic containers holding the stones snuggly in place. The board does click closed together but I would have preferred there to be a clasp of some sort to securely keep the board closed even if I decided to toss this board in the back seat of my car or if it were to fall to the ground while I'm driving.The magnetic surface is well made but it scratches easily from the magnets attached to the bottom of the pieces which isn't a big deal for this price point. The board does not lay perfectly flat however and there is a minor separation and rise in the middle of the board where the two pieces meet but it's very minor so you won't notice it unless if you were purposefully looking for imperfections. The stones are probably my biggest complaint. About 15 to 20 percent of the pieces had magnets on them which were not on the pieces perfectly flat. This caused me to have to apply pressure to them one by one in order to have the magnets on correctly. I hate extra work so I found this annoying but at least there is a simple fix. The magnets look snug enough into the prices so that I couldn't imagine them falling out of the pieces.The prices themselves feel a little too small for me and are awkward to hold when placing the stones but for a travel set at this price point it's hard to complain.All in all a great go board for the road or for use at windy outdoor locations. Great for kids as well but would not recommend this board for your main board to use at home because the pieces are too small to hold easily with any kind of satisfying click. 4Excellent travel-friendly budget setVery pleasantly surprised with this go set! I was looking for something travel-friendly, full-sized, and something budget-friendly to not need to fear wear and tear. Searched many listings, seeing mixed reviews almost everywhere. I cannot attest to the actual longevity of this set as I just received it, but it feels impressively durable. It's not the prettiest set, but it's highly functional. The magnetic stones (made of a light plastic of some sort) work well to sustain bumps and hiccups, and the board itself is very crisply printed with a smooth, glossy finish. I am not afraid to get this set a bit wet! I actually received four extra stones (1 white and 3 black) with it, and the stones are stored securely in the provided plastic dishes, complete with lid. These are held in place by raised lips on the underside of the board when folded. So very pleased! Exactly what I was hoping for! 5Couldn't ask for more for the priceOverall this is an excellent Go board. The two halves are connected by the hinges on a full length metal spike which means it won't break with use any time soon like some chess boards that are made from one single plastic whose connecting plastic hinges can wear out.The metal surface is without problems. There is a design feature (or flaw, depending how you look at it) which is the thicker line along the fold line in the center. I don't mind it, but if someone is used to one uninterruptible surface with equal line thickness it might be distracting.The included plastic pieces are the perfect size for the board. They have a magnet in the center on the bottom. Because they're magnetic it is not possible to hit them against the surface since magnets snap to it themselves. But no serious go player should complain about this.One design flaw is that when the board is closed it cannot be safely locked. It is a necessity if you wanted to carry the stone boxes inside the board. As is , depending how you hold it, the board could open and stones could spill on the floor. So keep and carry them separately for safety. 5
