Good set to learn with.Pleased with the strong magnets. The metal is molded right into the surface of the plastic so pieces hold even when upside down -- and yet is light.-weight. The plastic box snaps tightly shut and stays shut (with heavy usage plastic may give out eventually, a big hair rubber will hold it then). Plenty of room for the pieces which actually bang around a bit -- I may place a cloth or score pads in there. The "hinges" are simply extensions of the plastic so may eventually give out but this is not a problem to me (a little duck tape after many years of use). The 14" board and almost full-sized pieces for $16 seems to be an excellent value.I hope to make this a life-long set for study at night in bed or for easy transport to other locations in my house, and for sporadic trips. It is light-weight but I would get the 12" size or smaller size if you want to carry it around all the time. The plastic squares, though not exactly painted, probably would become scratched up with a lot of tossing around in a car trunk. I would keep the plastic bag with it as a cover. The chess pieces are beautifully crafted standard Stanton-esque with aesthetically pleasing color tone (muted white and muted black, ebony and ivory look). I actually like the feel of plastic pieces much more than lacquered wood. Playing chess on the silver and black squares is easy on the eyes. Only one magnet required a little glue. I threw out the checkers. Very pleased with the product. 5Magnetic chess and non magnetic checkers set.I bought this set thinking I might take it along to a tournament March 19-22 in Honolulu (part of the Hawaii Chess Festival 2015). They are supplying sets, boards, and clocks at the tuornament. I would use this set in my hotel room as an analysis set to go over my games, and to study openings etc, in my room between rounds etc. Looks like a decent set to me. I like that the pieces are pretty large and magnetic. When I got the set, one magnet and the round piece of tape that holds it in (the tape also acts like the felt would on a non magnetic set) had come out of a Queen. I put it back in. Please note, these magnets have a stronger attraction on one side than the other, and you want the strong side facing the board. This way, you can tilt the board straight up, and the pieces won't fall oof or slide down. One could use a little bit of glue, or maybe a hot glue gun with a dab of glue to hold the magnets in, should this problem reoccur. This set and board combo would not be legal in a USCF chess tournament, as I think the board isn't big enough. It also is not made for speed chess (or blitz, bullet, whatever you want to call it), as speed players tend to slam the pieces down (not to mention slamming the chess clock!), and I would be worried about the board seperating under this type of use. Though, actually, the strong magnets give a similiar effect that a heavily weighted standard tournament set does. I think the metal board itself may be attached with a sticky back tape to the plastic framework that holds it. This unit would be fine for home use, chess club use, and, our club is not USCF sanctined, and could certainly be used in our unsanctioned tournaments. The board has the rank and file letters and numbers. These assist one in that is learning algeraic chess notation. This chess notation lets you write down the moves in your games, and, once learned, allows you to read, use, and understand chess books for learning more about this great game. Set up your board and set, and go through the games of the great players. Learn chess openings, etc. The set is pretty reasonably priced. I have nicer sets, 3-4 made of wood. But they are going to cost you more. I would have liked a more secure fastening of the magnets. Glued in place from the factory would have been nice. I'll see how the tape holds up over time. The board positively shuts and latches with a click when you close it firmly. The pieces stroe inside the board, just be sure all pieces are laying down. Leave one pawn standing, and it won't close. The pieces are good looking. 4Very Poorly made. Two orders came damaged.I didn't even remove them from their plastic covers after seeing the damage both times but I can tell from looking at the damage that these are very poorly made and also very poorly designed. Also both orders came with the same exact damage which indicates that the entire stock might be damaged the same corner. Amazon's packaging was intact.If you look closely the edges come out a little just like table. It looks really nice but since these are made of cheap plastic those edges crumble and break very easily.lesson learned .... spend some more and buy wooden set. 1Have Your Glue Ready - Oh Well, Enough SaidThree pieces had to be repaired upon arrival. The magnets are quite weak. Pieces won't slide if you tilt the board but that's about the best I can say about it. The set doesn't cost much and that's good because it is a cheap set. I think they should have used a better quality magnet even if they had to raise the price by a few cents. No product should have to be repaired by the customer before it can be used. 1terrific travel chest set...This was purchased for my son (5) and he loves his chess game. The pieces are magnetic so they're even great on the airplace with no fear of something dropping to the floor and rolling away down the aisle (or worse, down the seat behind to who knows where). Unfortunately the checkers pieces are not magnetic so they don't work as great as travel (on a moving airplane or car)... I'm going to buy some magnets from an office supply place and glue them on...but that's another project for another time.... 5big size!My kid love this. We had a one same but smaller. This time we got a bigger one. very good quality. It is worth to have it. 5Perfect set for beginners!I purchased this to play with my kids. Price was right, and I wasn't expecting much. The pieces are weighted nicely and are magnetized to the board. (So when the baby comes and knocks the table, your pieces don't go crashing everywhere) The board actually snaps shut, which is quite convenient. I must say I am very pleasantly surprised in this set. You can still tell it is cheap (the seams on the pieces are a little uneven, the board doesn't lay perfectly flat when open, etc.), but for the same price at Wally World you'd get a set half as nice. It isn't travel size, but that is one of the reasons I chose it. I didn't want the kids to learn on a little mini magnetic set. I wanted something a little bigger. This set really is perfect. 5Two Design Flaws1. The hinge design prevents the board from resting flat on the table. This is not likely to cure itself.2. The adhesive on the felt circles holding magnets in place is too weak. Four pieces had no magnets in place. Four pieces had a second magnet...oriented felt to felt. So the strength of the magnets is greater than the glue. That's going to be a recurring problem.I purchased two boards, intrigued with the concept of a magnetic base for clearly inexpensive and lightweight plastic pieces. One for me and one for my grandchildren. I now realize that I'd have prefered an old-timey cardboard board with a bit more plastic inside the pieces. Not sure if I'll keep the two sets.Too bad. 3Pros/Cons +Was cheap +was 15" which was nice for the price +has checkers +magnetic for travelI wanted a cheap, 15" + board, chess and checkers set, with free shipping with amazon ($35+). This was the only thing that I found that fit the bill.Review: Pros/Cons+Was cheap+was 15" which was nice for the price+has checkers+magnetic for travel, magnets add weight to pieces so feels solid+the bottom of the chess pieces were nice, I was able to move each piece smoothly across each square+you can fold, which will act as a storage & it closes & locks in place so you can carry it around without worry of pieces falling out+looks a little fancy, but preety much everything made of plastic: the board, pieces- a small part of the side of the board (small hinge) came broken- some of the magnets were loose, but were restickable- no magnetic checker pieces (its noted, but makes sense to add magnets to the checkers: helps add weight to it and helps on travel)- the letters for black were facing towards white (backwards) so they are useless, to me at least- you can somewhat tell that there a small film/sheet laid on top (which make up the layout of the squares), its not too noticeable when playing* Overall this was a great buy and you get what you paid for, it was cheap. This was the only set that i found on amazon that had all I needed. You can easily fix broken pieces and falling magnets with SUPERGLUE, it does the trick. Its for travel but I just bought it cause it had chess/checkers, nice sized, & cheap so I wasn't concerned with the magnets. In the end I am happy. C+ 3Well constructed. Better than I expected.The chess pieces are perfect - very smooth; no mold seams. Magnets hold the pieces on even when I turn the board upside down. But it would help if the black checker pieces had a light-colored design on them; so they wouldn't be almost invisible on the black squares. I'm going to paint or tape a white mark on them to solve that problem. (And to anticipate a non-checkers player"s suggestion we put the checkers on the light colored squares: The rules dictate checkers be put on the black squares.) 5
