Fabulous choice!My kiddo loves chess but his little brother was always bumping the board. Now we can play without worrying about jostling and it's also small enough to take anywhere-- we've taken it backpacking, the park, canoeing... it's a sturdy little board! Love this! The pieces are plastic and small but easy to identify. There are two small ziplock to hold them which is hand when traveling with the board because there's a place to put them as pieces are removed during play. I'd definitely recommend this. 5Great Mini Chess SetThis magnetic mini chess set is much more attractive than similarly priced magnetic travel sets I've considered buying in the past. The king measures 1-1/8"H x 3/8"D at the base. The instructions are amusing; apparently English is a second language. In one instance, Rook is spelled "Rood."Don't depend on the small single sheet of instructions to learn how to play, however, because they aren't as clear as they could be and the capture "en passant" is omitted. There's no mention of notation, either descriptive or algebraic, and the board is not marked with the letters and numerals used for easy algebraic notation.As long as you don't need the instructions, this is a great little set. The pieces stay on securely and are easy to move. The board folds into a storage box for the pieces with a reassuring click and unlatches with a simple press. I'm puzzled as to why the first reviewer thinks the bishops look like large pawns because it's a Staunton set. Not only are they taller and have a larger base than the pawns, the bishops have a knob on top and the distinctive split in their miters.Highly recommended. 5Great little setGreat little set! I was concerned it would seem cheap because it was so inexpensive, but it looks good quality and has held up well so far. The size is perfect - the box fits in a large purse or easily in a small backpack (this was given as a Christmas stocking gift - just fit in the top :) ). The pieces hold well onto the board in place. I do see what some reviewers have mentioned, about the board collapsing if it is moved, but if you push the sides together and / or are careful, this doesn't seem a huge problem for me. But we do only use it at home / other people's homes, not actually in a car or plane etc. It's a great second set for our home. We're looking forward to taking it overseas with us this summer! Really glad we purchased!! 5Good little board and paint jobReceived in tact. All pieces. Good little board and paint job. My son and I have already spent hours together bonding and having fun. Only word of caution is in the small joint of the class that opens/closes the board, it can come off easy. And the magnets inside the pieces could eventually fall out if one is too rough with them. But I always keep some form of super glue around in case. Enjoy! 5Checkmate! Absolute best travel set.I've purchased this set as a gift once before, in 2011, and the quality is just as great now as it was then. The set is small enough that it can fit in some jacket pockets (depth permitting), purses, glove boxes, etc., making it highly portable to and from coffee shops and restaurants and any other place one might want to play a game with a like-minded date. The magnets on the pieces are surprisingly strong; the board can be up-turned and moderately shaken and the pieces won't fall off. I recall from the set I purchased in 2011 that eventually the magnets dropped out of some of the pieces, but that's easily rectified with a drop of super glue. I'm expecting this to happen again with this set, but, again, there's an easy fix. The board itself is nice to look at, even though it's plastic, and it looks and feels higher quality than for what one would pay less than $10. Very happy to have this set again! 5Great for playing with children.My son and daughter found an old chess set we had lying around the house, and became interested in the game. The set was missing some pieces so I looked on Amazon for another set. I wanted to get a good one for my son (he is 10) and a cheaper one for my daughter (she is 6). So I gave her this set and she loved it. That's the best part about it, it draws the attention of children. My 3 year old even became interested so I showed her what the pieces were called. We played and had a good time. A larger set I think would not have made the same connection as this smaller set. Love the price and its really portable, not to mention it was easier to play than the older large set we had. (it's a cheap Walmart set) The magnets helped the pieces stay on the board apposed to our older one which was a bit frustrating because the pieces would easily get knocked over or moved. OH! AND ALSO THE MAGNETS AND SIZE HELP WHEN YOU HAVE TO PANICKLY GRAB THE SET AND PICK IT UP WHEN THE 1 YEAR OLD RUNS OVER TO DESTROY!!!1. Affordable2. Fun for children3. Portable4. We bought via prime so that we would get it in time for a road trip (last minute purchase). So my boys could play in the car without having pieces sliding everywhere.... we ended up usning it in the hotel though since the magnets were all out when we opened it for the first time in the car. For our purposes, it is a bit too small (emergent young player - pieces and board are a bit too tight to manage), but I can see this being a good set for someone who wants to keep a set in a backpack or something similar. I would not reorder personally, but the set itself seems OK. 3Good, but a Word of Caution...I bought this primarily to use for following along to chess literature. And for convenient travel.Overall, this accomplished what I expected it to. It's reasonably small: kings are about 1.25" tall; pawns are between .5-.75" tall; all other pieces are in between.The board is about 6.5" per side; sides of each individual square are about .75". The board folds in half.The pieces come in a small re-sealable plastic bag and in theory, they can fit inside the board after you fold it up. In practice, I found it difficult to cram them inside the board, so I instead just store the pieces separately.The magnetic feature is VERY nice, as it allows you to place the board on uneven surfaces without worrying about the pieces falling off...while laying down in bed, for instance.My complaints about this item:1.) the re-sealable bag for the pieces has a narrow mouth, making it a bit annoying to take the pieces in and out of it. So I'd replace the bag if I were you.2.) The rooks look a bit too similar to the pawns...not a huge deal, since the rooks are thankfully noticeably taller.3.) THE MAGNETS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PIECES MIGHT POP OUT EASILY! (This is the word of caution I mentioned in my title.) Solution? Superglue the magnets back in. I haven't had a problem since.CONCLUSION: This is a good set for the money and I'd recommend this product. Just be sure to have some superglue handy because you might need it. 4
